When you have basement flood damage in Newark, it is paramount that you think of safety first. You might be able to initiate water removal until our Green Fleet arrives, but you need to ensure everything is safe before venturing into the basement.

    •    Flooding in the basement can bring electrical hazards for you as well as family members.

"SERVPRO" logo SERVPRO handles every aspect of your home's water damage. Call today for assistance.

SERVPRO Provides Many Reconstruction, Restoration and Remediation Services.

Many Newark clients are unaware that water leaking from a pipe or overflowing from a sink can often cause permanent damage to carpeting, particleboard, and drywall. Water can cause carpets to delaminate, and materials made from compressed materials to absorb water and swell. These items must be replaced and require some level of construction after all moisture is removed.

SERVPRO has operated in the community of Newark since 1990, providing water damage mitigation and reconstruction services, as well as fire, storm, and flood recovery services. We also hold residential and commercial contracting licenses permitting our company to provide various reconstruction services, including drywall, carpet, flooring, and cabinet installation, to return your home to its original condition.

Our SERVPRO team handles all aspects of the project, including:

Water removal and drying

Removal of permanently damaged items, including structural components

Installation and restoration

Coordination of the project until your home is as good as new, “Like it never even happened.”

Does Your Company Use Chemicals Harmful to Children and Pets?

After a water leak or spill, one of the most harmful contaminants is the potential for mold and mildew to establish an infestation. There may be bacteria in the area as well. These can cause health effects. For example, mold can begin within 24 to 48 hours after a water leak. SERVPRO can be at your home within 4 hours of being called, and we are available 24/7. A fast response can prevent these contaminants from causing harm to your family and pets.

Our team follows a well-established process to prevent the growth of mold and mildew:

Contain the source of water

Vacuum water from carpets and hidden recessed areas

Remove items for drying, repair, or disposal

Dry your home with the use of air movers and dehumidifiers

Apply antimicrobial sprays if required

Our Applied Microbial Remediation Technicians and address all of your questions regarding mold contamination and toxicity of any chemicals used in the process.

Is Mold Infestation Reversible?

White mold on a wall Need help controlling your Newark mold issues? Call SERVPRO we are ready to get to work.

Controlling Microbial Growth is Possible with Professional Mold Remediation Technicians. SERVPRO Offers Applied Microbial Remediation Technicians to Newark Residents in Need.

Can chemicals stop mold from growing?

When mold infestations occur in your Newark home, they create an exponential growth cycle that leads to further expansion and spreading. These full growth cycles can occur in as little as forty-eight to seventy-two hours. Getting rid of mold, then, becomes a race against time. The most significant measure of controlling mold is to control humidity. However, this may be tough to maintain long-term- mainly if moisture is a structural issue. Specially designed chemicals are useful in preventing molds from building through growth cycles. These are known as antimicrobial chemicals and can be invaluable to efficient and effective remediation.

What ways can anti-microbial chemicals be dispersed?

- Hand-held pressure sprays or diluted into water mixtures

- Hot water extraction equipment can incorporate antimicrobial chemicals

- Ultra-low volume thermal foggers or misting equipment

Are antimicrobial chemicals useful for all mold?

Antimicrobial chemicals are a useful tool for mold remediation in your Newark home. However, there may be some mold infestations that go deeper than surface level. In situations where there is minor to moderate wall damages, a SERVPRO technician may opt for antimicrobial paints to cover the damage. These paints act as both a sealant, trap molds, and as a base layer for you to decorate. Often these paints can incorporate odor-control to prevent musty odors from becoming an ongoing issue in the home. Our crew chiefs can walk through a job site with you to delineate any areas of continuing concern.

What household products get rid of mold?

- Vinegar is an effective way of combating light mold in the household

- Baking soda can absorb moisture causing molds to dry out

- Do not use bleach on mold as these only kill surface mold

If your property becomes a hotbed of microbial growth activity, contact SERVPRO of Newark at (302) 733-7933.

Household Newark Kitchen Fire, What Now?

SERVPRO is a Leading Fire Damage Restoration Service for Newark Residents.

Why are kitchen fires so common?

Kitchen fires are among the leading causes of house fires for Newark residents. Leaving a stove unattended can lead to sudden combustion involving flammable substances like animal fats or fuel for those with gas ovens. Oil-based flammables reject water, which can make fires uncontrollable. The typical damages associated with a kitchen fire include appliance damage, smoke deposits, or melting of the oven hood and upper wall and ceiling smoke residues. Burnt animal proteins can be odorous as well as challenging to clean using household products. SERVPRO technicians can identify different types of soot deposits and take the necessary steps to return your home to its preloss condition.

What are the most effective ways of removing animal fats from walls?

Protein fire damage in your Newark home can be stubborn and odorous. Protein fires are classifiable as wet smoke because the deposits are greasy. Wet smokes present a challenge as they can bond with surfaces. We recommend performing light vacuuming in the affected area to remove any dry or unbonded soots from the body. Opening windows and ventilating the space can help encourage odors to disperse. However, cleaning the remaining residues is best left to professionals with the correct knowledge, equipment, and cleaning.

What are the tell-tale signs of wet smoke?

  • If the source of combustion is oil-based or synthetic, it is likely to produce wet smoke deposits
  • Thick, greasy smoke residues that do not mix with water
  • Unpleasant odors in the affected area and surrounding rooms

What cleaners remove protein smoke deposits?

When dealing with smoke deposits, it is vital to remember that like dissolves like. Water-based smoke deposits respond to water-based detergents and cleaners. Oil-based smoke, therefore, responds to oil-based solvents. One way of understanding which cleaning products are useful is by testing on a wall's discrete area. If smoke spreads around, then stop- you may have to use a different solvent. SERVPRO technicians seek to use oil-based solvents that can suspend wet smoke particles in the solvent. We can then rinse the wall to remove both the solvent and the smoke particles. It may be necessary to repaint walls after soot to remove soot to return your home to its preloss condition.

How are solvents applied to smoke deposits?

  • Mix the solvent to the recommended dilution as per manufacturer instructions
  • Apply directly to areas of the wall with smoke damage and allow time for the solvent to suspend soots
  • After suspension time, rinse the wall using water with a detergent, place sheets or mats below to avoid further damage

Are kitchen fires solely composed of animal proteins?

While the cause of a kitchen fire in Newark may be an animal fat, the combustion can lead to other materials being burned. Most appliances use a synthetic finish. At high temperatures, these finishes can bubble and melt. Not only do kitchen appliance finishes cause harm to the appliance's surface, but they can also release other toxins into the environment in the form of smoke. Our technicians measure the type of smoke residues by taking pH tests of the smoke residues. Like oil and water-based soot, cleaning fluids should generally be applied to return the smoke deposit to a neutral pH. Alkaline deposits respond best to acidic cleaning fluids, whereas acidic soots respond to alkaline cleaners. SERVPRO technicians conduct extensive testing to mitigate against losses to appliances or other kitchen fittings.

How do professionals counteract fire odors?

  • Identify the source of the odor which may be soots or smoke residues and attempt to remove them through cleaning
  • Refinish surfaces using odor sealing chemicals and also put in place a drying strategy to reduce moisture
  • If odors persist after completing the above actions, fumigate the affected area using misting or ultra-low volume fogging equipment (ULV foggers)

What qualifications are important for fire restoration services?

A fire and smoke restoration technician (FRST) needs to be well-versed in the behavior of fire and the different cleaning detergents and solvents. Also, it can be helpful for technicians to have access to odor control professionals and equipment. It is usual for SERVPRO to dispatch an experienced crew chief, a production technician, and specialists for odor control or drying. It may be necessary to have some general construction training to help rebuild some or parts of your home during the fire restoration. SERVPRO cross-trains crew chiefs and technicians to ensure that you only deal with one company for most of a repair. If third-parties are necessary, we can arrange them on your behalf using trusted local specialists.

Kitchen fires are, unfortunately, one of the most common causes of a house fire. To avoid expensive damages and mitigate odor or soiling, contact SERVPRO of Newark at (302) 733-7933.

A Storm Left A Property With Flood Damage. Who Can Help?

9/16/2020 (Permalink)

A home with standing water all around the property. Storm damage more than most realize, let SERVPRO help you.

Contact SERVPRO Experts in Newark to Perform Flood Water Removal in Your Property.

After a storm, floodwater can seep into various areas in your Newark property and can cause severe damage. If not taken care of on time, the water can weaken your structure, cause mold growth, and wood rot. Fortunately, SERVPRO technicians can reduce the chances of these secondary damages from occurring if contacted on time.

What certification does SERVPRO have for restoration?

The Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) offers standards for cleaning and restoring damaged properties. Our technicians only highly trained, certified, and experienced technicians who can perform flood water removal in your Newark property. We can complete the job according to the standards the IICRC has set.

What should I do after flooding occurs in my property?

It is essential to contact your insurance company to inform it about the damage and begin the claim process. Also, contact professional restorers without wasting time to avoid irreparable damage to your drywall, wood, and other porous materials. Also, avoid:

  • Entering your property if it has suffered structural damage
  • Walking through flood water without turning off the electricity first.
  • Getting into contact with the contaminated water.

Can I turn off the noisy fans at night?

We do not recommend turning off the equipment since the more hours it runs, the faster the drying process occurs. Our SERVPRO team can place the drying equipment at strategic points to encourage optimal drying. Switching off the drying equipment can increase the drying time or provide an opportunity for secondary destruction like a mold infestation to occur.

How long can the odor linger?

Odors in your property can last for months or longer if not handled professionally. Floodwater can bring dead animals and different kinds of debris into your property, which can cause odors when rotting. However, with our approved deodorizing products, we can restore fresh air into your home. We can use water-based cinnamon to combat some odors. The product can replace foul odors with a pleasant scent.

It is vital to take immediate action when you experience flood damage in your property. Contact SERVPRO of Newark for efficient flood water removal. "Like it never even happened." Talk to us today at (302) 733-7933 to schedule a visit.

Does a Newark Homeowner Have to Pay for Resurfacing after a Fire?

SERVPRO Fire Damage Restoration Technicians in the Newark Area can Help to Recover your Home without Resorting to Expensive and Time-consuming Measures.

Do I need to resurface my home after a fire?

Resurfacing your Newark home can be a time-consuming process. We find that cleaning and restoration services can often be equally effective at returning a home to its preloss condition. One advantage of cleaning is that it is less time-consuming than stripping and resurfacing the home. For most residents, the timeframe of restoration is an essential factor since the work process can be inconvenient and obstruct your everyday life. When resurfacing or replacement is vital, SERVPRO can perform the necessary tasks. However, our work always starts with identifying the surfaces, residues, and affected areas of the home to ensure that our strategy is tailored to each customer.

Can cleaning be as effective on smoke damages as resurfacing?

Not all fire damage restoration jobs in Newark require replacement or refinishing of the home. Often advanced cleaning solutions combined with agitation, temperature, chemical action, and dwell time can achieve excellent results. SERVPRO technicians have multiple approaches to cleaning a property. We exhaust all possible avenues of cleaning before seeking to replace or strip surfaces. Ultimately, the faster we can return your home to a preloss condition, the less inconvenience it causes to residents. In most minor to moderate fire loss scenarios, a combination of cleaning with thorough deodorization is the most effective, time-efficient approach.

How do cleaning elements affect smoke residues?

  • Temperature can speed up the dissolving of soils in cleaning solvents and solutions
  • Agitation can help to dislodge soots from surfaces that may not respond to chemical solutions
  • Dwell time can help to ensure bonded soils become fully suspended in cleaning solution, or emulsion powder before being rinsed away

Resurfacing and replacing items in the home can be a time-consuming, expensive procedure. Contact SERVPRO of Newark at (302) 733-7933 now.

What Materials Are the Most Damaged After a Flood in My Newark Home?

8/31/2020 (Permalink)

Water spreading / flooding on the parquet floor of a house When a flood damages your home, contact SERVPRO for help with the next steps.

Flooding can cause substantial damage to many exposed structural elements and construction materials, but some are affected more than others.

There is no mistaking the devastation that flood emergencies can cause Newark homes and businesses. This is part of the reason that professional restoration teams like our SERVPRO response team react so quickly to these conditions. While standing water itself can be rife with hazards and health concerns for those exposed, the threat to structural elements is also a major focal point for the responding recovery technicians that must be addressed as soon as possible.

There is no set assortment of flood damage that Newark homes experience every time one of these disasters strike, making each loss unique in some regard. While many practices to restore and recover a flood-damaged home might be similar, every property is an individual loss situation that gets thoroughly inspected during the initial job scoping phase. We have competent leadership with our project manager and crew chief to walk through a threatened home and determine the work that must happen, the equipment necessary, and which materials have become most heavily damaged from exposure.

Is Flooring Able to Get Protected After Flood Exposure?

Flooring is often one of the most sensitive materials to floodwater because standing water stays directly exposed to these materials the longest. Typically installed materials in your house's living areas, such as carpeting and hardwood flooring, do little to resist water penetration. The objective of responding technicians is to protect the flooring material, but if that is not possible, then the secondary goal becomes protecting subflooring materials. Reducing build back and reconstruction expenses can help these phases to complete more quickly. Some of the tools we use to address both top layer moisture and to protect the subflooring include:

  • Drying Mats – Drying mats are a powerful tool ideal for either saturated wood plank flooring or on the subflooring material. These mats work together to pull moisture from an exposed surface at a controlled rate.
  • Air Movers – The placement and positioning of air movers can provide a critical blast of heated air where it is necessary to begin evaporative drying. Air movers are also essential for practices such as carpet floating to dry the surface layer and padding simultaneously.
  • Carpet Wands – One of the attachments for extractors that our team uses can be vital in removing water from carpeted floors. Much like hot water extraction cleaning, carpet wands pull water out of the fibers with forceful suction.
  • Weighted Extractors – Using our technicians' weight, these extractors press materials together to force moisture to the surface for collection by an onboard vacuum system.
  • Controlled Demolition – In some situations, physical damages have already begun when our SERVPRO professionals are notified of the emergency. When warping and swelling occur, the only solution for flooring is to remove it and reinstall it.

How Damaged Can Drywall Become After a Disaster?

Sheetrock is immensely porous, making it one of the most sensitive materials in your entire house to migrating water effects after a flood. When standing water settles around the base of a wall system, it can quickly get absorbed by the drywall, but then begin to wick up the wall even several feet beyond where the exposure on the surface stops. Often it is challenging to restore drywall, but the other elements of the wall system can usually get protected with practices such as:

  • Positive Pressure Systems
  • Air Movers
  • Dehumidifiers
  • Controlled Demolition

What Are the Immediate Threats of Saturated Ceiling Materials?

Ceiling materials can get damaged in a flood loss situation when areas like the roof allow for water penetration after a storm. Missing shingles or a partially collapsed roof system must get repaired or temporarily resolved with tarping before we can effectively remove flood damage. Our in-house team of contractors can help in that regard. Inside, they can also help with some of the threats to the structural elements of the house. Some of the risks that exist with water moving through ceiling materials include:

  • Sagging/Collapse
  • Water Damage to Lower Levels
  • Microbial Growth

Does SERVPRO Rebuild After Storm Losses?

With a team of contractors at the ready on our roster, we can help to provide a seamless transition between the mitigation phases and the reconstruction and build back that your property needs. After severe storm losses, some degree of repair is often necessary. We have qualified contractors experienced in the building trades to help your home however it needs when disasters strike.

Floods can be worse on some materials than others. Our SERVPRO of Newark team can help you get the property back to its preloss condition after a loss, beginning with some of the most damaged structural elements. Give us a call whenever you need us at (302) 733-7933.

How Can Water Get Removed from Ceiling Materials in My Newark Home?

8/27/2020 (Permalink)

water leaking on the floor of the basement of a house Water can get into your drywall and insulation and create many problems for your home. Contact SERVPRO for professional water damage remediation.

The migration of water can happen quickly, leaving ceiling materials and other susceptible surfaces threatened by saturation and deterioration.

When water service must reach the second story of your Newark home, its path through the property must often get concealed in structural cavities between the floor and ceiling. When age or an air hammer in the line causes damage to a portion of the plumbing, this breach can affect many of the neighboring materials surrounding it. While the flooring above the break in the pipe can also become damaged by spraying water, gravity tends to create a situation where ceiling materials suffer the brunt of these compromising conditions.

Water damage restoration in Newark homes and businesses encompasses many actions taken throughout the recovery process. For example, addressing the water damage in your house is more than water removal and drying, as repairs and even reconstruction are often necessary with plumbing breaks between the floors. Understanding how water moves and what materials can become affected can help homeowners appreciate the value of the experience and industry-leading equipment that our SERVPRO team provides.

How Does Water Move Through These Systems?

Ceilings often get comprised of many materials that make up a greater system. While you often notice damage to these surface materials you can see before you recognize a problem taking place, often, the other materials within this system have already become more heavily saturated. Elements like insulation can become weightier after absorbing water from the break, making it more likely that building materials around the insulation can begin to sag underneath the heavier load. Understanding how water moves through these materials can help our technicians to choose the best potential path to drying the damage. With these types of ruptures, migration occurs in several ways:

  • Liquid – The physical movement of fluid, such as runoff, spray, and flow from the busted pipes, can be the most direct path for water to take through ceiling materials.
  • Atmosphere – Prolonged moisture exposure can modify the humidity levels in the house and cause several porous materials used in ceiling systems to become saturated or affected by these changing conditions.
  • Capillary Suction – Water can get pulled through pores in building materials such as drywall or ceiling tiles, which can directly impact other contents and materials on the level beneath the break.

Where Are Unseen Moisture Pockets?

A detrimental situation that can exist when water begins to move through ceiling systems is the moisture and dampness that you cannot see. These pockets of water can create damaging conditions in your Newark home such as structural deterioration or the potential growth of microbial threats. Understanding how moisture and water are moving through the materials, even where you cannot see it, impacts the choices made to dry the structure. The better the understanding of these damp areas, the more thorough drying can become, and the more of the materials affected that can be preserved. Some of the ways that we can identify moist areas within the damaged materials include:

  • Surface Moisture Meters
  • Hygrometers
  • Thermal Imagery

How Can Water Get Removed from These Materials?

Understanding the processes to remove water from these affected materials is critical. Often homeowners might be under the impression that it is impossible to protect or preserve saturated materials once water has moved through them. Structural deterioration can exist after prolonged exposure, making the restoration or recovery of these items impossible. When approached quickly enough, and in the right circumstances, individual pieces of equipment in our inventory can directly affect impacted materials like drywall, insulation, and wood framework. These include:

  • Positive Pressure Systems – By creating manageable holes or openings to the structural cavity beyond ceiling drywall or tile, we can focus blasts of heated air into these spaces to promote evaporative drying.
  • Direct Drying with Air Movers – By removing portions of damaged materials through controlled demolition, we can then provide immediate access to the worst affected areas around the plumbing break. Centrifugal air movers direct dry air at these compromised surfaces for efficient drying.
  • Dehumidification – We have multiple dehumidifiers in our inventory, though desiccants often have the most significant initial impact on widespread moisture concerns. These units can exhaust dry air back into affected spaces, making drying and moisture removal more efficient.

It is not impossible to preserve and protect damaged materials after a plumbing break happens between the ceiling and floor of your first and second story. With a team of in-house contractors, we can offer immediate repairs, controlled demolition, and build back after drying completes. Give our SERVPRO of Newark team a call to help when you need it at (302) 733-7933.

Does the Same Company Provide Flood Restoration and Cleaning for Newark Homes?

8/26/2020 (Permalink)

Heavy rain on roof; trees in background With rain comes flooding. SERVPRO has the expertise to remediate all flood damage in your Newark home.

Our SERVPRO Professionals Have Efficient Cleaning and Restoration Strategies to Make Flood Losses "Like it never even happened."

Recovering a damaged property after a flood in Newark can require several steps happening in quick succession. As a leading flood restoration company for the region, we have been able to reduce the time of these projects by offering a comprehensive approach, including mitigation and reconstruction. With natural flooding, one of the chief concerns is exposure to potential contaminants, which can often get addressed with a thorough cleaning and other practices implemented along with the arrival of our experienced SERVPRO technicians.

Flooding restoration for Newark properties is only successful when all of the concerns and detrimental conditions have gotten addressed and resolved. To do this efficiently, we have both in-house contractors to oversee immediate repairs and demolition necessary to protect the property, contents, and occupants from contaminant exposure and qualified cleaning technicians to manage threats impacting surfaces and materials that do not require removal. A combination of strategies and products are necessary to return a flood-damaged property to preloss condition after a disaster.

What Is the Purpose of Job Scoping for Flood Recovery?

An evaluation of your property's damage and condition after a flood can be vital to determine the best approaches for restoration and repairs. The assessment gets conducted by our highly trained project manager working to establish current conditions to share with the responding technicians. The better prepared our SERVPRO team can be for the loss effects, the more we have the necessary tools and equipment to address the damage and potential contaminants before they worsen. The type of cleaning and recovery necessary for surfaces and contents can also get determined during this evaluation. Job scoping can identify potential restoration hurdles, such as:

  • Contamination – Natural flooding often comes with the risks of contaminants, bacteria, and viral pathogens. The effects of these substances on the contents and structural elements of the house can be destructive, but there are concerns about exposure for the property's occupants.
  • Content Loss/Damage – Your home's contents are often the most heavily damaged by stalled floodwater pooling in areas of the property. Even with our fast response, job scoping can often identify total losses and contents that can still get salvaged with the right cleaning approaches.
  • Structural Concerns – Oversaturation and absorption can degrade the structural integrity of flooring supports, subflooring, and wall systems to the point of collapse or failure.

What Conditions Could Exist with Natural Flooding Threats?

Natural flooding in Newark introduced particles, bacteria, and debris into your house from everywhere that the migrating water has passed. Water moving on roadways can pick up cinders, oils, and other fluids. Rushing water can uproot trees and carry other organic matter like carcasses and fauna into the home. There are no two identical situations when flooding is concerned, so the response necessary to clean and restore these conditions changes accordingly. Water breaching the exterior walls of your home can bring many substances and solids with it, including:

  • Bacteria
  • Viral Pathogens
  • Chemicals
  • Oils
  • Mud
  • Decaying Organic Matter

What Cleaning Products Get Used?

Cleaning is one of the critical elements of every restoration project that our SERVPRO team undertakes, but it is essential for flood damage recovery and repairs. Depending on what materials and contents in the house become exposed to potential contaminants, residues, and soils, the cleaning products and approaches used to restore them change. We choose among potent cleaning agents and chemical solvents to address pressing concerns on the property after a flood. These agents include:

  • Phenolics – These products are reliable and work well against contaminants such as fungus, microbial growth, viruses, and bacteria. These solutions often have a stronger smell than other options, making it harder to use with customers sensitive to overpowering scents.
  • Chlorines – Much like iodine-based solvents and products, chlorines are disinfectants with more potent oxidizing properties than other agents our SERVPRO team uses. These can get used as an active germicide in rooms with proper ventilation.
  • Quaternary Compounds – Regarding disinfectants, quats are among the most traditionally used because they have a pleasant odor that makes them a more suitable choice for residences than phenolics.
  • Botanicals – There are some businesses and homes that only want botanical (plant-based) products used for cleaning and disinfection of contaminants. Thymol and citric acid-based solutions fit into these categories.

As challenging as flood losses might seem, a significant threat exists with lingering or mismanaged contaminants. Natural flooding damage should get resolved with experienced professionals like our SERVPRO of Newark team. Contact us today at (302) 733-7933.

What should I do after water intrusion?

When water invades your Newark home, it is essential to act quickly to prevent further damages. Water intrusion can be a worrisome experience, which is why reaching out to qualified water restoration technicians can help to ease the burden of property deterioration. Our procedure works to reduce the impact of a water emergency by confining and drying it quickly. SERVPRO technicians can contain moisture by using physical barriers like sandbags or setting up an effective drying protocol in your residence. Mitigation is more cost-effective than restoration and acts as the first port of call for technicians. Once the problem is contained, we can work to return your home to its preloss condition.

What equipment is useful to contain water intrusion?

The core equipment we rely on when performing water mitigation in Newark residences is extractors. This equipment uses negative air pressure and temperature to draw bodies of water out of the home rapidly. We can apply this equipment using either truck-mounts for power or a portable unit, which are more effective at dealing with upper-level intrusion from leaking roofs or plumbing. Once water is extracted, we can set up a comprehensive drying system to ensure any residual moisture does not degrade your property or lead to secondary damages like mold growth.

What is the process of water mitigation?

  • Identify the issues with a thorough inspection of the property and measuring devices
  • Extract excess moisture using pumps or water extractors
  • Establish reliable drying protocols with dehumidification, heaters, and air-movement
  • Restore any materials with signs of damage

Why is There Water Damage Behind My Bathroom Walls?

5/20/2020 (Permalink)

Bathroom No matter when you make the call, we have technicians who can assist you.

SERVPRO Technicians Can Remove Water Damage and Odors from Newark Homes 24/7

While bathrooms are built to withstand large amounts of water, they are not invulnerable. Pinhole leaks in pipes can allow gallons of water a day to seep into a home, saturating drywall, warping wall studs and subfloors, and potentially creating an environment where mold can thrive.

SERVPRO technicians are ready to provide water cleanup for Newark homes that have endured any size disaster. Even small leaks can become larger, more costly problems without fast action. These Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC)-certified coordinate with you and your insurance adjuster to perform thorough cleanup and restoration for your home.

Detecting Moisture Behind Walls

Most homeowners are not equipped to fix pipe leak water damage on their own. However, that does not mean that they cannot detect the signs of damage before it leads to more costly issues like mold and structural concerns.

  • Touch the wall. Is it spongy, or even crumbly, to the touch?
  • Do you see discolored, bubbling, or peeling paint on the wall?
  • Smell the area. Is there a noticeable musty odor?
  • If you suspect that there is water damage, call an expert or test the area with a probe moisture meter.

SERVPRO Eliminates Structural Water Damage

These technicians begin the mitigation process with the use of portable, back-mounted extractors for clearing excess water out of hard-to-reach areas and wall cavities. If your bathroom is along an exterior wall, wet fiberglass insulation can often be cleaned, dried, and replaced.

After extracting moisture, the rest can be wicked off of surfaces with air movers and dehumidifiers. Technicians may establish polyethylene drying chambers to accelerate the process.

SERVPRO of Newark serves the community with a cleanup service that is Faster to Any Size Disaster. Call (302) 733-7933 to begin the mitigation process.

We understand the importance of keeping your business running, even when you've had an emergency. It is also critical to your business to protect your merchandise from damage.

In Newark, commercial water removal poses different challenges than water damage in a home. What Does SERVPRO do to Mitigate Damage to My Merchandise?
    •    Ventilate the store, using the HVAC system or with outside air depending on the temperature outside.
    •    We run Dehumidifiers to pull excess moisture out of the air.

We Identify rush items, so things of great importance can get back to you as quickly as possible. Even if deemed salvageable, SERVPRO technicians communicate before disposing of any item.

Ideally, our restoration specialists do not have to remove merchandise, and when they do, they aim to keep it a partial move-out to keep your business functional. However, when a move-out is required, it is beneficial for insurance purposes to have an inventory with detailed descriptions of the condition of the item.

Fire Damage in my Newark Residence Has Left Bad Odor, How Do I Remove It?

4/27/2020 (Permalink)

smoke billowing out of window Has fire and smoke damaged your home? Call SERVPRO to come in and elimanate the problems.

Call SERVPRO Restoration Professionals to Eliminate the Smoke Odor

A fire is one of the worst incidents that can occur in your Newark home. Apart from destroying structural materials and your belongings irreversibly and quickly, fire can also cause supplementary hazards like water damage from firefighting efforts. The byproducts of the fire could continue causing damage to your home long after it was extinguished, even if it was small and contained. Stubborn smoke odor is a common example of the consequences of a fire. The odor can linger for a long time and compromise the quality of indoor air.

Which Factors Determine the Ease of Removing Smoke Odor?

It is challenging to eliminate the smoke smell because smoke particles are tiny, and they can get anywhere, including wall cavities. After a fire damages your Newark home, the smoke particles can stick to many household surfaces and become embedded into different kinds of porous materials such as fabrics, furniture, carpeting, and paint. Removing the smoke particles requires effort and specialized odor removal equipment.

Several strategies are effective in reducing the number of smoke particles in a house. However, some factors determine if those methods can restore the safe living conditions you are used to in your house. They include:

Length of exposure – When a home has been exposed to smoke for a long time, the smoke odor can be embedded into household materials more deeply.
Size of the fire – A more significant fire produces more smoke. Therefore, the resulting smoke smell can be more intense and pervasive.
Kind of burned materials – When different materials get burned, they provide different odors. Some smells are easier to remove than others.

What Can I Do to Eliminate the Smoke Smell After a Fire?

As you deal with the aftermath of a fire, you can try some proven DIY smoke smell removal techniques to determine if the results are satisfactory. If the outcome is unsatisfactory or you do not want to do the job yourself, the best option is to enlist professional odor removal services. Some DIY techniques you can use to remove the smoke odor include:

Air out your home – Open all windows and doors so that there is good ventilation and a lot of fresh air in your house. You can also place fans strategically throughout your home for an added effect.
Deep clean your house – Remove porous materials like area rugs, decorative cushions, furniture covers, blankets, duvets clothes, linens, and towels from the affected areas and wash or dry clean them.
Wash the windowpanes to restore their shine and transparency, but pay more attention to the window sills and frames. Smoke residue mainly sticks to the window sills and frames. You can place them in a washbasin or tub and use shampoo or soap to clean them.

Use a solution of white vinegar, dish soap, warm water, and white vinegar to wash all solid surfaces. This includes doors and door frames, walls, ceilings, cabinets, baseboards, furniture pieces, light switches, light fixtures, and shelves.
Clean upholstery and carpets – Smoke particles can get embedded deeply into carpet fibers and upholstery, making it difficult to remove the odor. You can sprinkle baking soda on carpets and upholstery and let it stay for a few hours to allow the soda to absorb the smoke smell. Vacuum the surfaces after that with a vacuum cleaner that contains a HEPA filter.

As you can see, it takes several steps to eliminate smoke odors from a house completely. Therefore, it is advisable to work with restoration experts from SERVPRO to deal with the smell. We are fully equipped with sophisticated restoration equipment and years of experience.

What Can SERVPRO Do to Eliminate the Odor?

Our team can control and remove odors from your home and personal belongings by starting with basic deodorization procedures. They include:
Removing the source of the odor.
Cleaning odor-causing residues from surfaces.
Recreating the conditions for odor penetration.
Sealing surfaces as required.
Our crew determines if the odors are light, moderate, or heavy and then chooses the most suitable deodorization techniques. We also consider which materials burned. If the fire burned natural substances such as wood and paper, we can remove the smoke residue using suitable chemicals, a specialized vacuum, or a dry chemical sponge. If the fire burned protein-based substances like beef and chicken, a greasy film could be covering the nearby floors and walls. The grease can sear onto surfaces, and powerful chemicals are required to remove it. If the fire burned synthetic materials, the cleaning process requires specialized techniques and equipment.

Our SERVPRO team can use a thermal fogger to deal with the odors. We start fogging in the source area and dispenses less fog while moving away from the source area. Thermal fogging is an effective procedure for removing smoke odors because it recreates the fire-related properties of pressurization and heat. Porous materials pick up the thermally activated deodorant droplets in the same way they picked up smoke odors. The deodorant droplets enter deep inside tiny crevices, cracks, and pores of surfaces like the way smoke deposits were created.

If one deodorization technique does not remove the smell altogether, we consider which other methods could be useful for the kind of odor we detect. In many cases, we combine several deodorization techniques to produce the desired results.

When you need to remove odors from your home after a fire, call SERVPRO of Newark at (302) 733-7933. We have the expertise and tools required to remove the odor to make it, “Like it never even happened.”

Commercial Water Removal for a Newark Lecture Hall

3/16/2020 (Permalink)

A hallway covered in white materials with SERVPRO equipment on the floor. Don’t hesitate to reach out to SERVPRO when it comes to your Newark commercial water damage.

Your Newark commercial water damage can damage so much so quick, let us help.

University campuses often feature gorgeous, historic buildings that fuse more traditional design sentiments with the geometry and fluidity of modern architectural design. These buildings can look wildly different from the outside, but they often suffer similar problems internally. For example, both types of buildings can endure high levels of water damage that, without careful mitigation, can allow mold and odors to proliferate in hallways, lecture halls, and lab rooms.

If Newark facilities need commercial water removal that is fast-acting and effective, IICRC-certified SERVPRO professionals are available to restore your building so that students and faculty can safely congregate there once more. SERVPRO's cutting-edge moisture measurement and extraction tools make use of the discipline of psychrometry--that is, the study of how air temperature and humidity affect structures. With careful analysis, calculation, and observation, structures can return to a preloss condition.

Inspecting Your Facilities

Taking care of leaks requires a combination of thorough inspection and implementation and maintenance of alert systems. Water leak sensors, whether they are active systems that shut off water supply lines or passive systems that alert occupants to water exposure, are highly effective in curbing structural damage and property loss. Staff tasked with property inspection should keep an eye out for the earliest signs of water damage on sprawling university campuses, including:

  • Spongy floors that feel unstable
  • Bulging, bubbling, or soft walls
  • Recurring white, chalky efflorescence on brick and concrete
  • Water stains on tiles and discoloration or damage to the surrounding grout

Recovering Properties after a Storm Flood in Newark

3/3/2020 (Permalink)

"Storm damage? Call SERVPRO, we can help" Our professionals have state of the art equipment to clean up and restore your home so you can return safely after any disaster.

SERVPRO’s Steps to Recovering Your Belongings After a Flood Incident

Storms are frequently accompanied by torrential downpours that can overload drainage systems or dams, causing flash flooding in your local area. Fast-moving floodwaters can overwhelm your home, resulting in large quantities of standing water that can seriously damage floors, furnishings, and fixtures. We offer water restoration technicians to residents of this community that are experiencing flood issues in their property and can quickly set to work mitigating further losses, removing excess water, and restoring your home.

Property owners that experience a storm flood in Newark should avoid trying to move the furniture themselves. We understand that homes are built over the years with accumulated possessions that hold significant sentimental value or considered irreplaceable. However, floodwaters can carry all kinds of dangers including harmful diseases and should not be approached without personal protective equipment (PPE.) Structural damage may also be sustained by large quantities of water, resulting in uneven surfaces or weakened floorboards and present a severe health hazard.

The quickest way to reduce the potential losses in a flood situation like this is to remove standing water and moisture from the affected area. To reduce immediate losses, SERVPRO deploys pumping equipment along with extraction units to remove excess moisture from home. Water extractors can be up to 1,200 times more efficient at removing water, and prolonged exposure to moisture can cause further losses than initially anticipated. By mobilizing this equipment quickly, SERVPRO technicians can significantly reduce your losses and claims the expense.

The next stage in performing a complete restoration is to ensure that the property is dry. Floodwater migrates and can wick into cavities into the subfloor or other recesses that are common in a home environment. SERVPRO technicians use an established drying procedure that incorporates both air-moving and dehumidification equipment. This stage is essential to preventing further losses because it reduces the likelihood of secondary mold damages from occurring in the property after service is complete. By drying the property, technicians not only tackle unpleasant odors but also guard against the future expense of secondary damage claims.

SERVPRO of Newark is available for property restoration and water mitigation services at (302) 733-7933.

Spring is Coming in Newark – Learn How to Avoid or Address Potential Water Damage

Even though you know that spring weather is on the way soon, you still need to keep in mind that the potential for water damage is always looming. As a homeowner, you should know what to look for and how to act should you be faced with a water loss event. SERVPRO technicians are always available 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, whenever you require assistance.

Water damage in Newark can happen at any time throughout the winter months. As the springtime sets in, warmer temperatures create thawing that leads to soggy, uneven groups. As snow melts, puddles often form, and flooding may occur. SERVPRO teams often see basement flooding that can happen unexpectedly, along with a variety of other issues from the spring thaw.

Some of the things to look out for include:

Snow Melting

Grading the ground around your foundation is the best way to keep the melting snow from getting inside through cracks and crevices. Creating a slope of about six inches from the foundation to 10 to 12 feet away from your property can keep the water from getting into the basement or foundation.

Ice Dams

When the weather is warm, and ice melts, it can cause ice dams to build along the roof edge of your home. Carefully removing the snow with a roof rake can prevent the dams from developing where water can get inside your home and causing issues.

Gutter Clogs

If the gutters on your home clog, water can spill over and down into your foundation. Ensuring that all gutters are free from debris ensures smooth water flow.

SERVPRO’s skilled technicians have the training and experience necessary to address whatever water loss event you face in the springtime or any other time of year. We work to clean and restore interior building materials, ensuring that your structure is safe and sound. For basement water loss events, we have high-powered pumps and vacuum technology to remove all standing water to make sure that moisture levels are brought back down to normal.

Do you need help with water damage, and you need help fast? You can count on our team at SERVPRO Newark. You can reach us by calling (302) 733-7933, and we can make it “Like it never even happened.”

When Newark Hotels Experience a Water Loss Event

Newark Hotel Managers Rely on SERVPRO for Commercial Water Removal Services

Hotels managers may sometimes find that rooms or hallways in the building become flooded. There are several factors that can lead to property flooding; however, the crucial aspect of proper business management is how you respond to these situations. Bodies of water can cause primary and secondary damages to the structure of a building. They can also present immediate dangers relating to slip and trip hazards or power cutting. As a hotel manager, it may be necessary to remove guests from rooms in the immediate vicinity, shut off power in the affected area, and contact your insurance adjuster.

Communicating with your customers and staff in an emergency is vital, which is why we offer commercial water removal services for businesses in Newark. Our team of qualified technicians is led by an experienced crew chief who can handle the restoration of structure and contents, allowing you to focus on your customers and staff. SERVPRO can deploy emergency generators as well as lighting equipment to offer a self-sufficient restoration that does not rely on the building manager. We can communicate with you about appropriate staging areas for equipment as well as regular updates on outcomes and equipment.

Transporting gallons of water from one area to another relies upon equipment with the appropriate power as well as intake and outtake hoses. SERVPRO crew chiefs may need to ask you where an appropriate outlet for water removal equipment is, whether an exterior sewer or a drainage system within your hotel. Alternatively, we can bring with us large, truck-mounted storage tanks to hold excess water before disposing of it at our warehouse or a designated wastewater facility.

Removing water is most effective using extraction equipment. There are many different types we use, which depend on the building materials and decor within your hotel. Thick carpets may benefit from weighted extraction tools. Upper levels with restrictive access, on the other hand, may better suit light and portable extraction wands. We train SERVPRO technicians to recognize the best types of equipment to suit the job at hand. By thinking on our feet, we can ensure your business gets back to a preloss condition sooner, rather than later.

If your hotel becomes flooded, you can contact SERVPRO of Newark at (302) 733-7933 for commercial restorers.

What to Avoid When Dealing With Fire Damage in Newark

Taking Care of Chimney Fire Damage in a Newark Home

Many homeowners enjoy relaxing with friends and family by the fireplace. Still, without regular cleanup, creosote deposits and soot in chimneys can catch fire and cause extensive damage to the home. There is an average of 25,000 chimney fires every year in the US that cause over $125 million in property damage. When this type of disaster occurs in your home, there is a team you can count on for rapid service that is focused on restoration.

If your Newark home has suffered fire damage, SERVPRO is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, to return your residence to a preloss condition. SERVPRO technicians, staff, and franchise owners alike all receive extensive training and education in fire damage cleanup, as well as the claims filing process, to better assist homeowners and insurance adjusters and filing accurate and comprehensive claims. On top of that, SERVPRO uses industrial-grade materials and EPA-registered cleaning solutions to remove residues and odors effectively.

Tips for Chimney Fire Prevention

  • Have a professional inspect the chimney and fireplace annually. Creosote and soot buildup in your fireplace are the number one causes of chimney fires. A certified chimney sweep can handle the job with ease and ensure that your chimney is safe to use once more.
  • Keep fires small and use seasoned wood. Small fires produce less creosote, especially ones that burn more brightly, which means less smoke and soot buildup in your chimney. Dry wood that is seasoned for more than six months is ideal because there is no wet material that condenses inside the chimney to create creosote.
  • Avoid using paper or flammable liquids in your fireplace. These materials can create flames that can get out of hand quickly because they can float up the chimney and ignite pre-existing creosote deposits.
  • Install a chimney liner and cap. Chimney liners improve airflow for combustion gases while protecting your chimney, making it easier to clean. Chimney caps, meanwhile, prevent animals or debris from getting into your chimney.

SERVPRO Removes Odors & Debris

The most effective odor removal method, aside from deodorizing, is removing odorous soils like charred creosote deposits. After cleaning, deodorization can take place using a variety of materials. For example, a thermal fogger may be used to remove odors from around your chimney.  This type of deodorizer is a counteractant, meaning that it combines chemically with odor-causing particles and either eliminates or changes them.

SERVPRO of Newark wants to ensure that your home looks, "Like it never even happened." No matter when you need assistance after a disaster, you can call (302) 733-7933.

Factors That Determine Restorability from Fire Damage in Newark Homes

A common sight that greets many homeowners upon first viewing the fire damage in their Newark home is a large, wet pile of their possessions in the center of the room. This scenario happens because, during firefighting efforts, the firemen push burning debris to the center of the room and hose it down to stop it from igniting. Progressively more gets added until the danger of fire in the place is over.

When SERVPRO technicians arrive to clean up fire damage in Newark properties, they immediately move our charred items and building materials. They then examine wet items for restorability potential to save the homeowner the cost of replacing possessions.

Inspection Elements
When the techs go through items in fire loss areas, they look for possessions that have restoration potential through their advanced cleaning methods. Porous items often have the least amount of potential salvaging because of the absorption of soot that can get worse through the application of cleaning products.

Cleaning Methods Commonly Used
Fire loss cleanup is never a one-size-fits-all process. The techs carefully test surfaces and items to determine the construction materials. The results assist in choosing the best methods and agents to utilize for smoke damage removal. Pack-outs and cleaning at our facility is an option where Immersion Cleaning - a robust cleaning method for the non-porous items can prove to be effective. Ultrasonic cleaning and the Esporta Washing Systems are advanced equipment.

?    Dry Cleaning - used most often for lifting away dry smoke before wet cleaning solutions get used.
?    Wet Cleaning - a very effective method against wet smoke residues. SERVPRO has exclusive solvents and cleaners to release the hold the smoke damage has on surfaces.
?    Foam Cleaning - a cleaning method used to clean and refresh upholstery and window treatment fabrics that have the potential to shrink or bleed when wet cleaned.
?    Abrasive Cleaning - commonly used to remove residues.

Repair to the Home
Once the techs finish cleaning up the fire loss to the structure and contents, they create a report to assist the homeowner in filing their insurance claim and expedite the reimbursement. This report details not only the actions taken during restoration but also necessary repairs to restore the property entirely. With their general contractor license #1992104829, SERVPRO saves homeowners the stress of finding an outside contracting company for rebuilding needs.

SERVPRO of Newark at (302) 733-7933 has certified technicians ready to address any size fire damage to your property and make it "Like it never even happened."

Fire Loss in Brookside? Call SERVPRO!

1/6/2020 (Permalink)

Building on fire After a fire, many times demolition is necessary. SERVPRO has the training for safe debris removal and building restoration.

Is Controlled Demolition Necessary After Brookside Fire Loss?

Structure fires can be a destructive force in Brookside homes. Without a prompt response by professionals to begin mitigation and other emergency services, it can become costlier the longer you wait. As overwhelming as the circumstances might be, your insurance provider is going to recommend or insist on the use of professional restoration for cleaning, debris removal, and other recovery tasks. Our SERVPRO team stays ready to help in these situations as soon as we get cleared to enter a home by first responders.

While debris removal and immediate hazards must take the center focus of our initial actions, handling structural concerns is another vital aspect of recovering fire damage in Brookside homes. Fire losses present multiple layers of effects, but the most threatening is the weakening of structural elements like subflooring materials, ceiling drywall damage, and even potentially collapsing walls.

Often, debris removal after a fire loss incident involves our SERVPRO technicians arriving with shovels and other similar hand tools. Debris, ash, and other half burned remnants can disrupt clean airflow throughout the property. Removing damaging debris can also help to reduce the concentrations of smoke odors and circulating threats like soot particles. This same catalyst can get found in charred structural elements like drywall, flooring, and more.

Identifying the need for demolition and reconstruction is not a situation that gets made lightly. We have a team of competent, licensed (#1992104829) general contractors that can assess the stability of structural elements and when it is more cost-effective to remove damaged materials rather than attempt to restore them. For particle board cabinets in the kitchen, for instance, it can often be less expensive to replace the cabinets rather than utilize advanced strategies to restore it.

Understanding whether your home needs reconstruction services or not after a fire is rarely a determination that you can make on your own. We have skilled technicians capable of assessing structural integrities and the times where controlled demolition can save our customers money after a fire. Give our SERVPRO of Newark team a call today at (302) 733-7933.

The Appropriate Steps For Water Cleanup In Newark

12/21/2019 (Permalink)

Take the Appropriate Steps for Water Cleanup in Newark

A flood in your basement or significant water intrusion in any area of your home can be very devastating. When left to fester, excessive water can turn into major structural issues, and you open up the door to potential mold growth. You should take the necessary steps for cleaning up the water by calling the professionals at SERVPRO to help you mitigate the damage in a timely fashion.

Whether there is water from a storm or a significant leak from an appliance or broken pipe, water cleanup in Newark must commence quickly so to keep the loss to a minimum. With any water intrusion, you have the risk of dangers from electrocution, slip and fall, and more. The first steps should always include making sure that the electricity is off in the area of the flood and that you are careful with your footing.

Standing Water Removal
Whether there is a little bit of water or a lot, it can be tough to think about total cleanup until all of the water is removed. Our team of SERVPRO technicians comes in and assesses the situation to implement the best plan of action for water removal. In the event of deep water, we have sump pumps to bring down water levels quickly. Once the water level goes down significantly, we use high-powered vacuums to pull up the rest of the water from floors and carpeting.

Proper Drying
It is paramount that the impacted area is dried quickly to reduce the risk of mold and mildew growth. Once mold starts to form, it can spread rapidly within the first 24 hours of water damage onset. SERVPRO technicians open up the windows and use high-powered axial fans and air movers to assist with air circulation. This process can be useful when the balance of interior temperature and humidity (RH) does not adversely affect comfort levels. We also have industrial-strength humidifiers to pull any excess moisture from the air.

SERVPRO Is Here To Help
Once you call us at SERVPRO, we are here to help from the initial stages of water cleanup through drying and disinfecting. We use specialized products to clean non-porous surfaces, and we can help determine what is salvageable and what should be thrown out.

Ogletown Property Owners Rely on SERVPRO to Remove Malodors Following a Fire-Damaging Event

Managing Indoor Air Quality after Fire Damage Affects Ogletown Home

The effects of a fire incident in any Ogletown home are felt in many ways. Apart from the contents and materials charred or consumed by the fire, air quality issues can also develop after the incident. SERVPRO has IICRC certified Fire and Smoke Restoration Technicians who consider every aspect of a fire loss, including the diminished indoor air quality (IAQ.)

The Threat of Particulate Matter

For proper management of air quality when fixing fire damage loss in Ogletown homes, there is a need to understand how the problem develops. During the combustion process, various residues are released, including soot and ash. While most of the residues adhere on surfaces, some remain suspended in the air or find a way into the HVAC system, especially if it is on during the fire. Removing these residues is the only way to restore preloss air quality. Our SERVPRO technicians check air ducts for the presence of residues and clean them with specialized duct cleaning equipment. We also change removable filters to ensure the system does not reintroduce particulate matter into the house when operated.

Removing Odors

A strong odor can make it uncomfortable to stay in a house after fire damage. In most cases, the odor emanates from residues and charred items that remain around the house. Our SERVPRO technicians spend considerable time cleaning deposits and removing charred materials. We use different procedures, including mechanical agitation such as sanding, vacuuming, and chemical action from detergents and other professional cleaning agents.

Cleaning the Air

The aerosols and fine particulate matter released into the air during combustion can remain in the building for a long time affecting indoor air quality. Such materials can cause problems for people with respiratory issues. Various procedures can help clear the air. Our team can use ventilation equipment such as axial air movers, which move large volumes of air at low pressure to force the air out of the structure. This is a process called negative air pressure. We also have air filtration devices that can capture particulate matter in the air, especially when fitted with HEPA filters that capture 99.97 percent of particles, improving its quality. Air scrubbers play a significant part in capturing airborne particles, and when also fitted with activated charcoal filters, reduce odors in a two-pronged attack.

Breathing fresh air is essential for comfort and good health. Call SERVPRO of Newark at (302) 733-7933 to help clean up your fire-damaged property. We're Faster To Any Size Disaster.

We Act Fast In Brookside To Restore Your Home After A Fire

Holiday Dinner Accidents can Leave Fire Damage Throughout Your Brookside Residence

Grease fires are not the only possible cause of fire inside your Brookside home's kitchen. Turkeys, roasts, and hams can all overcook or basting liquids can spill over during the arrival of guests and the preparation of all the side dishes. Food prepared on the top of the stove can also catch fire if left unattended for too long.

Any food burning can produce a thick, pervasive smoke that can leave your residence in Brookside full of smoke, in addition to the fire damage caused by any flames. The SERVPRO team working on your home after such an incident is dedicated to working as efficiently as possible to get things safe and clean for you and your family. The holiday season is stressful enough without the interruptions caused by an unexpected fire.

Because we can scale our services to any size disaster, SERVPRO technicians are available to merely deodorize your home after such an incident, clean away smoke deposits, or tear out and rebuild areas where the fire damage destroyed walls or ceilings. Our building team works under Residential Contractor License # 1992104829, assisting us with every aspect of restoring your home from the damaging and destructive effects of heat and fire.

Even basic foods like rice can fill your house with dense smoke if it cooks too long. While smoke from rice and many other low-protein foods looks white, it can leave a strong odor behind. Deodorizing and using our dry sponge technique on surfaces can leave affected areas of your house smoke-free.

Cooking a turkey by deep-frying, which is becoming very popular, should take place outside the house and at a safe distance. A fire starting inside a skillet full of frying food pales in comparison to a large vat full of hot oil with a turkey lowered into it. Turkeys prepared this way taste delicious, but the process can start a fire quickly if the bird contains too much moisture on its surface.

SERVPRO of Newark wants families in Ogletown, Pike Creek, and North Star to enjoy celebrations this holiday season safely. If fire damage makes this impossible, call us at (302) 733-7933.

Black Ice Can Be Dangerous

12/3/2019 (Permalink)

Black Ice

SERVPRO of Newark wants to warn you of Black Ice this time of year!

Black ice is a term for frozen water that forms on roadways when there is even the slightest amount of moisture present.  This forms slightly above the road surface where the tires are riding above the actual road surface and is hard to detect.  This is a big cause of accidents during these cold winter months when temperatures reach below freezing (32 F)

Bridges can be especially dangerous and precaution should be taken between sunset and sunrise.

The best thing to look for is the pavement is dry and see spots that look dark and glossy, there is a good chance those areas have the dangerous layer of ice formed already and to take precaution when driving.  Since your vehicle has lack of traction on ice, the best rule is to stay calm and let the vehicle pass over it without breaking or accelerating.

SERVPRO has Newark Covered for Fire, Mold, Water, and Storm Restoration and Remediation

11/26/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO vehicles in parking lot At SERVPRO of Newark, we are always ready to be deployed at a moment's notice.

Why Newark Residents Trust SERVPRO Restoration Services for Fire, Mold, Water, and Storm-related Loss Recovery

Professional home restoration services encompass emergency action as well as remediation of long-term damages. SERVPRO of Newark is here to serve the many residents in this corner of Delaware. As a restorer of private and commercial property, our primary concern is to mitigate further losses in your home before then seeking to reverse the damage. Generally, these two procedures go hand in hand to get your property back how it was before loss- what we call a preloss condition. Our trained technicians are capable of rectifying mold, water, fire, and storm-related harm caused to your Newark property. You can reach us anytime by contacting our twenty-four hour customer service team.

Mold Remediation

Fungi is a microbe that makes up a part of any home environment. As such, the complete removal of microbial growth is impossible. What we can do at SERVPRO is bring microbial growth back under control. We do this by remediating the source of mold damage in your Newark home and taking steps to ensure it does not reoccur. You may need to bring in professional, Newark-based restoration services if you discover microbial growth or notice musty odors in some areas of your home.

Our experienced team is made up of qualified mold assessment and remediation technicians. We carry the necessary licensing and equipment to combat mold growth effectively. The first concern for a restorer facing a microbial growth issue is to find the source of the problem. As a homeowner, you may have already spent time removing mold only to find that it returns within a day or two. Our restoration services here in Newark mitigate against that by investigating the source of the problem- which is usually a slow-leak, damp spot, or insulation issue.

After resolving the source of the issue using essential cavity drying equipment or plumbing repair, a SERVPRO technician can begin to reverse damages. Fabrics suffer the most from a mold infestation but, by using our Esporta washing machines, we can remove up to 99% of soiling. During the removal of mold colonies, we can set up harmful air pressure zones to prevent spores from becoming airborne during cleaning. This process ensures your mold issue does not spread to unaffected areas of the home.

Water Damage Restoration

It is common for microbial issues to be the result of a previous water damage issue in your Newark property. SERVPRO restoration services incorporate anti-microbial protection into our water restoration methods. Usually, the most effective measure to prevent long-term issues is to ensure the property is thoroughly dry. We can achieve this in your Newark home by taking regular humidity, moisture content analysis, and water meter measurements during service.

Water always migrates from wet areas to dry areas. In a water-related restoration service, SERVPRO needs to trace possible water migration. We can achieve this by using thermal imaging cameras to check inside wall cavities or underfloor without having to perform demolitions. However, if the discovery of water inside a cavity in your Newark home, it is essential for us to gain access to it and dry it properly.

Structural cavity drying does not need to be invasive or destructive. SERVPRO water restoration technicians (WRT) can use drying mats and injectidry systems for cavities. An injectidry system features several "injector" nozzles at space of four inches apart. These nozzles are attached to a hose connected to a vacuum system. By removing the baseboard and drilling small holes into the wall, we can connect the injectidry system to the wall and circulate hot air into the cavity. This equipment can be extremely effective at neutralizing potential damp spots or future microbial growth issues.

Fire Damage Restoration

When a fire starts, hot smoke containing all kinds of harmful, odorous chemicals releases into your Newark home. The rapid changing of temperatures can create air circulation, which spreads ash and soots all over the immediate area. Beyond that, smoke can travel through the home, leaving unpleasant soot deposits on walls and ceilings. Restoring fire damage in your Newark home yourself may seem like a cost-effective endeavor. However, you do risk spreading damages around without the correct cleaning methods or chemicals.

At SERVPRO, we believe a homeowner can help to correct certain damages but should also be mindful of the expertise needed to restore others. As a general rule of thumb, light vacuuming, as well as removing charred materials or debris from the property, can be helpful to a restorer. Areas where the soot deposits are thickest, like walls and ceilings, are best left to professional restoration services. Your technician can guide you in the cleaning effort of your Newark home if you would like to assist with the cleanup.

Smoke residues fall into two main categories. The first is water-based staining, while the second is oil-based. SERVPRO technicians use oil and water-based solvents to dissolve thick soots and remove them together with the solvent. The type of solvent matches the type of staining, so water-based for natural soots and oil-based for synthetic ones. SERVPRO equip technicians with a full-range of cleaning agents for use in your Newark home and are confident of restoring it to a preloss condition.

Storm Damage Restoration

Adverse weather conditions can cause extensive storm damage to your Newark property. These issues can range from broken doors, windows and roofing, to wide-spread flooding. It may be necessary in some cases for temporary relocation while restoration services are carried out at your Newark home. SERVPRO restoration services are on-hand to help guide the process from mitigation of further losses, removal of unwanted materials or floodwater, and restoration of the damage left behind.

Depending on the severity of the storm damage, third-parties may be required to perform the full restoration. These third-parties may include electricians, plumbers, general contractors as well as architects and remodelers. A SERVPRO restorer works as a connecting element between third party restoration and the mitigation of immediate losses. Mitigating efforts may include packing out your possessions for safe storage as well as removing water from the home.

We can also perform deodorization and safety inspection to secure the structural integrity of the property that allows third-parties to work there safely. The immediate aftermath of a storm exposes your Newark home to the elements or trespass. SERVPRO can prevent this by placing emergency tarps over roof cavities or performing board ups of doors and windows to prevent unlawful entry. Storm recovery can be a stressful experience for homeowners and last anywhere from a few days to several weeks. At SERVPRO, we keep in contact with you throughout service and can provide a detailed inventory of all restoration work for passing onto your insurer.

Home loss recovery projects can be frustrating, but they need not be permanent or overly expensive. For water, mold, fire, or storm-related issues, contact SERVPRO of Newark at (302) 733-7933.

SERVPRO Can Save Your Home from Flood Damage in Newark

Newark homes can suffer from devastating structural issues after storms swoop in that bring flood damage. Not only is there the danger of the loss of structural integrity, but there is also the saturation of your home’s contents and potential contamination from bacteria and other elements found in standing water. You can protect your home by enlisting the help of trained SERVPRO technicians to bring specialized techniques and equipment to the job.

While flood damage in Newark can happen in several ways, our technicians can start by assessing the situation to determine the best place to start. Water extraction begins, and our content management team can remove any of the items from your home that are at risk of severe damage. While a fair amount of the structural damage remains unknown until a closer inspection takes place, other steps are taken to cut back on the amount of flood loss.

After removing standing water, SERVPRO technicians start to dry out all saturated materials. We have a variety of discovery devices that allow us to locate moisture in any structural supports such as joists, framing, wall studs, and other areas of your home. The degradation of critical structural elements may lead to collapse, so we work quickly to address any potential threats. Safety is undoubtedly our main priority, and we work diligently to preserve or replace key components of your home’s structure.

Depending on the type of flood damage your home has suffered, our technicians may need to expose damaged materials to employ the use of specialized industrial-strength products for disinfection purposes. These products help to reduce the potential for mold growth and to prevent the spread of harmful bacteria. We can perform flood cuts as a way to access studs and framing so that dehumidifiers and air movers can get to work drying out all of the moisture that might be present.

SERVPRO of Newark understands that flooding can be very stressful and overwhelming. Give us a call at (302) 733-7933 when disaster strikes, and we can send out a team of skilled technicians as soon as possible.

Fast Cleanup After Commercial Storm & Flood Damage Strikes in Newark

Silicone roof coatings are becoming more and more prized by businesses with flat roofing because it is both water-resistant and eco-friendly. However, storms can take their toll and cause this coating to lose its effectiveness, which can allow water into your building and cause further structural damage.

If your Newark office suffers storm and flood damage, a team of SERVPRO technicians can mitigate disaster and preserve your facilities. Technicians and franchise owners alike receive extensive, continuous education on both water and fire-related disasters to aid business owners and use that knowledge to preserve structures.

Signs of Damaged Silicone Roof Coating

While silicone roofing is highly valuable for offices looking to save on utility costs while implementing eco-friendly infrastructure, silicone roofing is still susceptible to damage. Keep an eye out for these signs that your silicone roofing may need repairs or replacement:

  • Roof ponding that has not drained in over 48 hours
  • Coating material pulling away from roof edges
  • Tears, cracks, or other signs of erosion

It can be tempting to fix these issues with "quick fixes," but silicone roof systems need to be repaired with compatible silicone to retain their properties. Without proper repairs, these roof coatings can trap heat or allow water and other damages into your structure.

SERVPRO Can Save the Day

SERVPRO can salvage both electronic components and documents with specialized techniques unique to these items. Professionals can disinfect computers, printers, scanners with OSHA-approved cleaners, and ensure that components are dry before operation. This service to electronics is for exterior restoration only. If inspections and more are required for the internal workings of these pieces, we can refer you to a specialist. This is beyond our scope of service. For documents damaged by rainwater and not contaminated by groundwater floods, papers can be freeze-dried and carefully thawed off-site or dried directly on-site depending on the extent of the damage. This process is called lyophilization.

Carpet and pad, laminate wood, or vinyl flooring may need to be removed in the event of ground flooding, as these flooring systems become heavily damaged quickly. If your facility needs contracting services, your local SERVPRO team has a commercial contracting license (#1992104829).

SERVPRO of Newark is Faster To Any Size Disaster so that you can get back to business quickly and safely. When disaster strikes your commercial facilities, call (302) 733-7933 for cleanup that can begin within hours.

Protect The Contents Of Your Newark Home With The Help Of SERVPRO Technicians

Living in Newark is unique, it’s the type of place where you understand the difference between “The Beach” and “The Shore,” can eat three meals a day at Wawa, or settle for saying, “I’m kinda from Philly,” when someone from out of state asks where you live. It takes a unique sort of person to live in the first colony after all.

Dealing with flood damage in your Newark area home requires a unique solution as well. You want to have access to a local company that can protect your home’s contents that also provides restoration services that can meet or even exceed your expectations. You have managed to locate a company with all of the personnel, equipment, and resources needed to successfully return your area property to a quality pre-flood damage condition.

No one wants to settle for less, nor should you, and while most homeowners are content with waiting for technicians to arrive, other do-it-yourself (DIY) minded folks may want to get started while they wait. We must stress that if there is any possibility of contamination in the water invading your home, that you should avoid contact and wait for a professional to confirm that it is safe.

Protect The Contents Of Your Home – You can help SERVPRO technicians prevent further damage to contents by securing loose draperies or removing scattered materials after a flood. Items such as books, papers, boxes, area rugs, and shoes can all leave stains behind if not handled correctly. Check all storage areas, such as closets, stairwells, or under your beds for any items that may cause problems.

Always avoid causing additional flood damage to carpeting, vinyl, or hardwood flooring by leaving the appliances, furniture, and heavy lifting to the professionals.

Extraction Of Excess Water – SERVPRO uses both extraction and evaporation to remove standing water from your home. However, it doesn’t hurt to throw down some towels or activate a sump pump before help arrives. Just remember that the professionals have the most efficient way to remove excess water, so don’t plan on putting much of a dent in this before help arrives.

Gain additional humidity control by ventilating the structure by opening doors and windows.

When your SERVPRO of Newark team arrives, we can utilize various equipment to accelerate the drying process and help remove all of the damaged materials and contents. Call any time, 24-hours a day, 7-days a week for full-service cleanup and restoration services. (302) 733-7933

Establishing Drying Zones to Manage Flooding in Newark Homes

10/6/2019 (Permalink)

Water on the floor in a hallway. Let SERVPRO manage your Newark flooding damage in your home.

We know just what to do when it comes to your Newark flood.

Open-air drying practices are a challenging system to obtain the efficiency and effectiveness necessary to quickly restore flooded Newark homes. Our professionals have accreditations through the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) in every facet of the water recovery niche to provide knowledgeable and confident service to our customers in a crisis. Part of this effective response and high-caliber result involves efficient drying practices like establishing controllable zones.

Drying zones are an effective means of addressing multiple layers of flood damage to Newark homes. From air contamination and extraction to drying and deodorization, designated work areas help to streamline our efforts to save our customers time and money. Setting up this area involves the installation of our 6mil plastic sheeting around the entire work area. This effort sections off the affected region from the rest of the house, reducing the spread of contaminants and the migration of water effects.

These new quarantined areas allow our SERVPRO technicians to influence the airflow and filtration directly. We can force contaminated or hazardous air out through exhaust lines to the outside of the house and begin drying efforts on saturated elements within the containment barriers. Because we can regulate the spread of these effects throughout the house, we can ensure that our drying practices, which include the use of drying mats and air movers, are more efficient and effective.

If flooding stays localized to specific areas of your home, these same drying zones can help to ensure that you do not get displaced by this disaster. We can work to minimize our impact on your life by establishing these work areas and allowing you to stay on the property when possible.

Containment is a large part of the work that we do, as this practice alone can reduce worsening conditions, prolonged recovery efforts, and costly additional restoration. Drying zones provide both containment and an efficient area for more rapid drying and decontamination efforts. Whenever disaster strikes, give our SERVPRO of Newark team a call to safely and thoroughly manage the situation at (302) 733-7933.

Urgent Needs for Flood Water Removal in Newark Is Why SERVPRO Invests in Training and Equipment

9/25/2019 (Permalink)

A sign with the words Newark Delaware on it. We invest in the very best for our customers in Newark, let us help you with your water damage.

SERVPRO will always be first in line to assist your Newark home flood.

Speedy and professional extraction of flash flood waters must occur within 24 to 48 hours of a storm loss in Newark to avoid microbial growth. Contamination of flood waters is expected, with the fluids flowing into your home containing everything from fertilizers and mud to human and animal waste. Risks to occupants of your home include exposure to bacteria, fungi, viruses, and toxic chemicals and heavy metals. Although the water might drain away eventually, the immediate need for its exit is why our services are so critical.

We Follow Industry Best Practices

Managing flood water removal in Newark requires trained and certified technicians with the most up-to-date resources. Our employees complete the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) training, with a focus on becoming Water Damage Restoration Technicians (WRT) and Applied Structural Drying (ASD) experts. Training requires efficient and high-capacity equipment to support our employees. This is why we invest in the latest proven innovations for performing water removal and structural drying.

We Use EPA-Registered Disinfectants and Other Precautions

Flood waters are by definition incredibly contaminated. As heavy rains pour down and flow across the ground, they pick up substances and debris, including chemicals, silt, drowned animals, and untreated sewage. Human pathogens, including viruses and bacteria, mix with the fluids, entering your home as toxic sludge. Our technicians apply disinfectants pre-cleaning as a workplace safety measure and post-remediation to kill any lingering pathogens. They wear personal protective equipment (PPE) and install negative pressure air scrubbers to filter and exhaust airborne contaminants during the project, why SERVPRO can be trusted with your family’s safety.

We Take Responsibility for Proper Containment and Disposal of Hazardous Waste

Keeping up with current rules and regulations concerning contaminant disposal is our priority. You can be confident that we can protect both your family and the materials making up your home from the toxic materials in the flood water. Our vigilance is why SERVPRO is a wise choice when you cope with heavily contaminated water.

Controlled Demolition Needs Buildback

We often need to remove pieces of drywall to release trapped water or provide access to dry out a property properly. Our company's general contractor’s license enables us to provide repair and reconstruction services directly, another example of why SERVPRO can complete a restoration job seamlessly. We achieve our commitment to making it “Like it never even happened” by avoiding you need to hire another contractor for finishing tasks.

Replacing a Portion of Plumbing After Drying Your Newark Home

Drying out your Newark home after a loss incident must always be one of the top priorities for homeowners. With how quickly a situation can get out of control when a portion of plumbing bursts, especially in the wall, our SERVPRO team would like to reiterate that we are always here to help however you need. We also want to present our potential customers and neighbors with practical tips and advice about how to move forward once you believe the water damage has gotten dried successfully.

Once you feel confident you have addressed the water damage in your Newark residence, you have to set your sights on repairing the structural concerns and replacing the compromised section of pipe. You have likely already exposed this damage when you implemented drying tools to address moisture and standing water in the wall cavity. If not, you must remove the drywall immediately in front of the broken pipe, leaving yourself room to work and clean edges to replace portions of removed drywall after you have re-pressurized your plumbing.

Replacing plumbing is part of the services that our one-stop-shop restoration team can handle in your water damaged property. Our licensed (#: 1992104829) professionals have years of experience and can address issues with the plumbing, drywall removal, drywall installation, and other reconstruction needs your house might have. If you insist on attempting it on your own, here are some simple steps to help:

 - If possible, remove damaged piping by cutting out sections. This approach reduces your need for longer joints of pipe.

- Once the water damaged portion gets removed, clean threading of existing connectors and elbows you intend to use.

- Measure the span of removed plumbing. Mark and cut that length from your new joint of pipe.

- Attach compression fittings to each end of this new portion of pipe. Tighten sufficiently.

- Set female connections on exposed ends of old pipe still in the wall.

- Once your new piece of pipe is in position, thread all pieces together and tighten female fittings on existing plumbing.

We know that repairs like this can be overwhelming, especially when you also have water loss effects to contend with as well. Our SERVPRO of Newark team can help you through any phase of recovery that you need, all you have to do is call. You can reach us 24/7 at (302) 733-7933.

Your Newark Home Can Be Saved After A Flood

9/6/2019 (Permalink)

Kitchen suffering from significant flood damage “Like it never even happened.”

How Homeowners Overcome Flood Damage In Newark Homes

Overwhelming is the word most property owners use to describe the sight of flood damage in their homes — water rivals fire for the potential to destroy a home. A single inch of groundwater has the potential to bring bacteria, toxins, and debris into a house, which in turn affects the floor, and any part of the structure or contents it touches.

It is a smart move to outsource the cleanup of flood damage in Newark properties. Groundwater is something humans and pets should not come into contact with it until the completion of water-testing because there is no way of knowing what is present.

Why SERVPRO? After an in-home disaster such as flood loss, the entire situation can feel stressful. SERVPRO takes the stress off property owners whenever possible by offering not only restoration services but also reconstruction through our general contractor license. This seamless service allows a one-stop approach to return the home to its preloss condition.

Safety First
The first concern of SERVPRO technicians is safety for all. The technicians usually advise property owners to relocate off-site during mitigation. Containment of the work areas in the home is vital to inhibit cross-contamination, especially in cases where a portion of the property has the effects of damage from flooding.

Removal of Wet Items
On an item-by-item basis, the contents of water-loss areas receive an inspection for restoration potential. Porous items saturated with groundwater have little to no chance for restoration as there is no guarantee of their return to sanitary levels for reuse. The technicians remove nothing without the consent of the property owner or adjuster.

Staying Within the Scope of Coverage
Communications sometimes fail somewhere between the insurance carrier and homeowner as to what services have coverage. The technicians interact with both adjusters and property owners to ensure everyone is on the same page for each phase of the cleanup, so no actions outside the scope of coverage result in surprise charges.

When flood damage happens, contact SERVPRO of Newark at (302) 733-7933 for expedited cleanup and reconstruction to get your life back to normal “Like it never even happened.”

Let The Professionals Handle the Water Damage Remediation Process in Your Newark Home

Leaking ceiling from water damage. Call the remediation professionals at SERVPRO to help deal with any water damage disasters in Newark.

Water Damage in Newark Home Definitely Needs Professional Assistance

Water damage comes in many forms, such as broken pipes and forgotten faucets leading to mini-floods. But nothing is worse than the damage caused by a toilet backup. When sewage is part of the problem, you need professional restoration services to ensure your home returns to a sanitary condition for habitation.

One of the biggest dangers of this type of water damage in a Newark home is the danger of cross-contamination. When SERVPRO handles black water or category three biohazard issues in a home, our main concern is safety for all during mitigation. It is common for us to:

  • Put up barriers or negative air chambers to limit the spread of airborne particles
  • We wear personal protective gear during clean up
  • SERVPRO technicians dispose of extracted water in accordance with municipal regulations

Certain porous objects are a loss in this type of water spill. Carpet and padding cannot return to a hygienic state and require discarding. In some cases, solid wood baseboards have the potential for cleaning and disinfection that allows for reuse. We inspect each item affected by water loss to determine the restoration potential. Whenever possible, we use our knowledge of cleaning methods and state-of-the-art equipment to clean and disinfect items.

During drying, it is common also to deploy air scrubbers to assist in the removal of odors and airborne particulate. Once dry, we use our professional-grade formulas to ensure there are no contaminants left on any surfaces and apply any necessary odor control applications.

SERVPRO technicians communicate with homeowners and their adjusters every step of the way. We know this type of home disaster is stressful and along with saving as many of the home possessions as possible, we also make sure we work within the scope of coverage, so there are no surprise out-of-pocket expenses. In some cases, sewage water may wick into sheetrock, or other areas and need removal through our controlled demolition techniques. We have a General Contractor's license #1992104829 and offer a seamless service from restoration to reconstruction as required to return the home to its preloss condition.

Leather Cleaning in Offices

8/27/2019 (Permalink)

Noticeable difference of this leather sofa cleaning part way through.

Leather cleaning for the home or office

Real leather furniture can look nice, but it won’t stay new-looking forever.

The first thing to do when your leather furniture is starting to look “not so fresh” is look for the manufacturers care label that is attached to your furniture, usually under the cushions on even possibly underneath the piece of furniture.

Most times, proper cleaning instructions are listed on this are what is recommended.  If you cannot find any instructions, or if what is listed on the label doesn’t work, there are a few things you can try.

The least harsh cleaning method that works great is mild dish soap and water.

The 2nd method to try, if the soap and water method doesn’t work too well is to try some vinegar on a white cloth.

The 3rd, and sure-fire method and strongest is to mix equal parts rubbing alcohol and water and mix in a spray bottle and spray on, let sit for a minute when wipe off with clean towels.

There are many other options that you can find on the internet, but if you don’t want to try any of this at home, just call SERVPRO of Brandywine/Wilmington at 302-762-8080 and let us do the hard work for you with our own special cleaning agents specifically for leather furniture for your home or office.

Replacing A Leaking Hose Bib Before It Damages Your Newark House

The winter months in Newark bring excessively cold temperatures and cold snaps that can quickly freeze any exposed vulnerabilities in your plumbing. While many homes have the pipe leading to a hose connector outside insulated from these threats, aging fixtures can lead to small leaks that worsen over time. Without recognizing these threats, even something as simple as a steady drip on the hose bib outside, you risk leaving your house vulnerable to a substantial water loss emergency when this fixture freezes and breaks.

The best way to discover any water damage in Newark home fixtures like this hose connection and valve assembly is to inspect them visually. Sometimes water leaks are minute and difficult to identify, and regularly inspecting the plumbing as best as you can allows you to discover growing problems before they become costly and devastating emergencies. When you determine a need to replace this outside faucet connection, you have some options. While we are licensed residential contractors through the state of Delaware that can handle the full replacement of your entire plumbing system, we can help our customers with some quick tips and strategies to replace these fittings and protect them against the cold weather to come.

Home improvement locations should have all of the new fittings and hose connector that you want based on the pipe size and threading coming from inside of your property. A good idea is to take your old hose bib to compare with any new choices you are making and ensure they are similar sizes. Installing the fixture requires very little beyond the physical components and a couple of tools.

Getting the old hardware off can be among the most challenging aspects of this repair, and it often requires one person standing inside where the pipe enters the property with a monkey wrench preventing the straight piece of plumbing from turning and breaking when unthreading the connection outside. When putting the new hardware on, you can help to reduce the possibility of leaks and breaches in the future with the application of some thread tape. This tool provides a better seal for the fittings and reduces vulnerabilities over time.

While homeowners can often address replacing small fixtures like this on their own, our SERVPRO of Newark team is always here when the job becomes more significant than you initially thought, or you need the assurances of a job done correctly. Give our professionals a call whenever you need us at (302) 733-7933.

Our Crew Is Here To Help After A Fire In Your Brookside Home

8/12/2019 (Permalink)

Blue speech bubble with "Need Help?" in white If you have fire damage, contact us today at (302) 733-7933 to find out more on what we can do for you.

Residential Fire Damage Restoration In Brookside

With the Blue Hens as neighbors, Brookside residents get to enjoy both small-town and collegiate living. Life along I-95 still has many of the same drawbacks as living elsewhere when it comes to risks like floods and fires.

A short in a small appliance or the older wiring in some homes often causes fire damage in Brookside homes. Restoring those residences requires SERVPRO specialists to perform demolition and disposal, rebuilding where necessary, cleaning affected materials, and even what might be called the finishing touches.

Take a small, two-bedroom home a married, student couple might rent for example. If the fire began in an electrical socket in the kitchen, then the overall effects usually stay limited to the kitchen/dining area with some smoke generated throughout the small residence. Here, our initial efforts in the kitchen start with demolition and disposal while other response team members in the rest of the home wipe down surfaces to remove smoke residues.

After demolition, technicians expand cleaning operations. Electrical fires usually burn cleanly, leaving dry, powdery residues for the most part. To remove them, team members use dry sponges and carefully wipe down everything from top to bottom. Where the layers are slightly thicker, they use a small amount of water or a mild cleaner to break them up for removal.

With cleaning finished, SERVPRO teams install new interior walls and ceilings to replace the damaged panels. If the fire burned long enough to scorch the wall or ceiling framing behind them, they sand down the burned layers to remove them and eliminate the odors they generate. If burned too deeply, they dispose of the sections and replace with new wood.

Once the team completes rebuilding, technicians work with the owner and residents on making the structure a home again. They can paint or wallpaper, so it looks exactly as before, but if they have the option from the insurance company, they often upgrade to a nice paint or another wallcovering.

At SERVPRO of Newark, we want to put every one of our neighbors back into their home as quickly as possible. If you have fire damage here or in North Star, Ogletown, or Pike Creek, contact us today at (302) 733-7933 to find out more on what we can do for you.

Newark Flood Damage Mitigation from Roof to Basement Starts with a Call to SERVPRO

Storm and Flood Damage in Newark From the Attic Down

https://goo.gl/maps/pfDXtJtXRPsbQGKQ6

Wind plus tree limb equals a damaged roof. Once that happens, rainwater enters, and the timer starts ticking for water damage to the home. For most homeowners, when this happens their first phone call is to their insurance adjuster, the next is to SERVPRO.

What to do when a storm impacts your home?
We answered a call to mitigate storm and flood damage to a Newark home. Several hours earlier, an intense storm cell rolled through, and high winds caused a tree limb to damage the roof and water poured into the attic.

Inspection, Scoping, Plan of Action
Upon arrival, our technicians scoped the attic and found water within the insulation and in the ceiling joists, the area between floors that often proves challenging to dry without the application of specific equipment and methods. Another standard procedure we do during mitigation of an attic is containment as moving things around tends to raise dust and dirt that have the potential to enter the rest of the home.

Advanced equipment and tools expedite the restoration service
Fortunately for this homeowner, their insulation of choice was fiberglass-based. We have special vacuum attachments that let us collect the wet insulation for drying in-plant and reuse, but preferably to discard and start with new blown-in insulation. Once that is removed, the extraction of remaining moisture and drying becomes a fast procedure. We used injectidry equipment to direct warm air into the voids, thus increasing the evaporation rate. We can then capture this water vapor with a dehumidifier as we eliminate the moisture buildup. Our air movers took care of the rest of the attic, followed by hand cleaning and odor control.

Equipment must be manned by well-trained personnel
Our technicians that handle this type of home damage have extensive training and the following certifications from the IICRC--the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification:
?    Applied Structural Drying Technician ASD
?    Carpet Cleaning Technician CCT
?    Odor Control Technician OCT
?    Water Damage Restoration Technician WRT

Our team provides comprehensive water removal through repair
SERVPRO technicians did temporary repairs on the damaged roof and tarped over the opening to stop any further water from entering the attic before repairs happened. We have a general contractor license #1992104829 and were able to offer the homeowner our services for restoration from the storm loss as well as repairs to the roof to eliminate some of the stress and provide a seamless transition from cleanup and mitigation through to the repair.

When storm and flood damage need fast and thorough cleanup, call SERVPRO of Newark at (302) 733-7933. Our trained, certified technicians have both the experience and equipment to make the water damage in your home "Like it never even happened."

We Act Fast To Limit More Damage To Your Newark Home

A storm hit this beautiful home, when big heavy winds came blowing through and high rains. We arrived right away to begin restoration.

Small Scale Flood Removal in Newark Plus Pungent Odor Removal

Water damage separates into three main categories: clean, gray and black. When loss from a storm happens, if the water entering a property is rainwater from a damaged roof, as long as it is cleaned up within 48-hours, the danger of bacteria and contamination is slight. The problem is black water from groundwater flooding. This type of water intrusion brings anything it encounters into the home, including sewage, chemicals and debris.

When SERVPRO answered a call in a Newark home for flood removal, we found the loss centered in a single area of the house, the stench of sewage permeated the air. Luckily, the homeowner removed the sofa and chairs into another part of the home when the water entered due to heavy rains. The french drain that should have directed water away from the property backed up and water pooled around the back entrance instead.

During the initial call, our technicians advised the homeowner to stay out of the room until we arrived on-site in protective gear to test the water and perform the flood water extraction. After we arrived, testing showed the water contained both sewage and bacteria. We treated the water before removal efforts began. Our certified Water Restoration Technicians used portable pumps for speed and efficiency. Little standing water remained visible; however, our moisture detection equipment showed migration into the carpeting.

To save as many of the belongings as possible, we photographed and notated non-porous items as we removed them to another area for cleaning with our EPA-registered disinfectants. The only significant loss in this flood damage mitigation was the carpet and padding. Because of the danger of injury moving wet carpet, we used weighted extractors to pull as much groundwater as possible out of it. Then our technicians cut it into strips and removed it from the house and disposed of it properly. Fortunately, because the homeowner called SERVPRO in so quickly after the initial incident, we found little additional flood damage.

Drying and disinfection reduced the pungent odor in the home but did not eliminate it. Our technicians used both air scrubbers and ultra-low-volume fogging to remove the remaining odors in the house to prepare it for installation of new carpet and padding.

Flood removal needs to occur as fast as possible to limit the damage to your home. Contact SERVPRO of Newark at (302) 733-7933 we can extract the water and rebuild as needed. We proudly serve our local community and are available 24/7 because We're Faster to Any Size Disaster.

Commercial Water Damage Causes

Commercial drying equipment in a hallway

Often times business owners may think and visualize water damage in the work place occurring after a massive storm that floods through offices; shutting down their business for days, even weeks. While that is sometimes true, there are many other causes of water damages.

Here are some typical causes of water damage in the workplace: Plumbing and/or a broken pipe is extremely common. Sometimes a pipe can give way for no specific reason. Due to weather changes, the pipe may expand and contract causing it to burst or pop. Specifically, sprinkler systems in unconditioned air space. Sewer lines in bathrooms can get backed up for numerous reasons. Should you encounter a sewage back up, know the potential dangers of category 3/black water that can cause health issues. SERVPRO of Newark is available 24/7/365 to help you in a time of need.

Your Key To Success in Flood Damage Remediation in Newark

7/16/2019 (Permalink)

Flood damage in Newark can be exhausting if done alone. Call the remediation team SERVPRO today for help.

Seasonal Storms Bring Flood Damage to Newark

Fierce storms rage across Delaware in spring and summer, threatening your Newark home with straight-line winds and tornadoes. Heavy precipitation overwhelms storm drains, forcing backups into basements. One storm follows another, dumping rain on the same area several times over a short period. Flash flooding and significant seepage into residence lower levels then occurs. Professional flood mitigation and remediation is a must.

Newark flood damage needs fast action to avoid structural deterioration and to manage water contamination. Our managers and technicians master the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) training to learn the best practices to restore your flooded house.

Storms often knock out your electricity, but SERVPRO uses gas-powered pumps for water two inches or deeper and truck-mounted extractors connected to onboard generators for final water evacuation. Our service vehicles stock the water removal and structural drying equipment needed to contain and dispose of floodwater and then dry out the wet spaces. As our crew moves the water out, we use thermal imaging to locate any large caches of fluid migrating into building cavities during the flooding. If needed, our crew makes flood cuts, sawing through and pulling out wet drywall from the floor level up to several inches above the waterline.

The flood cuts open access to trapped floodwaters and enhances the reach of warm, dry air circulating when we set up the drying perimeter. After SERVPRO cleans and disinfects the wet surfaces with EPA-registered products, our Applied Structural Drying (ASD) technicians design a drying plan based on the recorded moisture levels of structural components in the flooded space.

Air movers and heaters dry the air so that moisture absorbed into building materials vaporizes. Our high-efficiency dehumidifiers condense or absorb the vapor for collection and removal outside of your home. Once we meet the drying targets SERVPRO rebuilding specialists can replace and repair the storm damage and the structures we tore out to remove the water.

SERVPRO of Newark has the trained technicians and equipment to return your storm-damaged home from chaotic and flooded to  “Like it never even happened.” We answer customer calls round the clock at (302) 733-7933.

Drying Saturated Carpets in Your Newark Home Quickly

Carpeting is a standard construction staple for Newark homes, and often a spot most susceptible to saturation and water loss when emergencies occur. Preventing the exposure of this flooring type might not be feasible, but this does not mean that the material itself has become too irreparably damaged to save. Our professionals have a deep inventory of recovery tools and mitigation equipment that can quickly salvage even heavily saturated flooring, including both carpeted areas and elements like hardwood or vinyl planking.

As you might expect, the approach to restoring water damage in Newark homes depends on the severity of the situation and its positioning in the house. Our SERVPRO team can quickly identify the source of the incident, and use advanced discovery devices like infrared imagery and thermal tools to locate moisture pockets and dampness beyond the surfaces of exposed materials. These tools can show our technicians the depth of water damage beneath carpeted floors.

It is not difficult for saturation to penetrate beyond the fibers of the carpet and into the subflooring and padding underneath. Often our SERVPRO professionals can utilize specialized equipment like weighted extractors to remedy the majority of this exposure by forcing moisture to the surface for water damage removal by a powerful onboard vacuum. When the spreading water effects penetrate deeper than the padding, however, more intricate drying and recovery methods are necessary.

While floating a carpet, which mostly involves placing high powered air movers between the carpet itself and the subflooring materials can help to dry both of these elements, structural supports and joists are harder to dry out in this manner. When saturation exists in these areas, it must either get addressed from the crawlspace or basement of the home or requires the complete removal of the carpets to get down to these exposed materials for focused drying efforts.

Knowing how your carpets can get protected and preserved when water loss incidents occur can showcase the importance of fast response to these emergencies. While we have skilled water restoration technicians available 24/7 on our SERVPRO of Newark team, you are the vital first step in making these loss incidents “Like it never even happened.” Give us a call today at (302) 733-7933.

Commercial Warehouse Security

For any commercial business, small or large, if you warehouse any inventory, you should always make sure this area is secure for many reasons.

Here are many common-sense reasons to keep security up-to-date:

  • Make sure your area is protected by construction materials that can be difficult for bad people to break in and also to keep out the weather elements
  • Monitored alarm with recording of all entries and exits as well as coverage by 24/7 video
  • Great lighting inside and outside perimeter will aid in protection
  • Fencing around the outside of your warehouse is optimal
  • Critical protection systems like smoke detectors and fire suppression's are an extra layer of security. This will also help if there is an emergency the proper authorities can be contacted.  In the unfortunate event of a water or fire emergency, the damage may be reduced.
  • All these things may give you discounted insurance premiums

Please remember that SERVPRO of Newark 302 733 7933 is always here to help!

Soot Lurks in Home after Fire

Soot on Ceiling in Home after Fire

After a fire has happened in a home and the “smoke clears” it may seem like the immediate danger has passed.  While that is true in a sense that the fire is gone and it may be safe from further destruction, there is still a danger that may lurk in the home.  There is perhaps soot residue now present.  Soot can cause odors, discoloration, corrosion and etching.  SERVPRO of Newark offers a thorough cleaning of soot and smoke residue left behind from fires.  We know that smoke behaves in a way that is different in each and every fire.  Depending on what the fire was, how it started, temperatures, air flow of homes and the list goes on, we clean the entire home in a detailed process.  In this picture you can see how the soot in the ceiling is coming off as SERVPRO cleans it. SERVPRO helps it "Like it never even happened".

No Camping Here

Tent Method

Water damages are always different and can be challanging. Each can pose a variety of different materials to mitigate. Drying a wood gymnasium floor can tricky. SERVPRO of Newark is always up to the challenge and can apply a wide range of drying techniques. In this case, some localized drying was performed using a “tent” method.  Rather than attempt to remove moisture from a large area with a high ceiling, SERVPRO of Newark created a smaller area to dry. This allows for much quicker and more efficient moisture migration from the wood into the atmosphere, which is collected via the low grain refrigerant dehumidifiers. Saving the materials are a priority, and in this case the entire surface was salvaged without the need to replace the costly wood floors.

Keeping Your Pet Safe From Accidental Fire

4/25/2019 (Permalink)

Keeping Your Pet Safe

Protect Your Pets From Accidental Fires

Approximately half a million pets are affected by house fires each year. Many house fires are caused by pets, especially when left home alone. Here are some tips to help prevent any accidental fire started by your pets and for keeping your pets safe in the event there is a fire in your home.

Open Flames

Dogs are curious creatures and may take interest in a flickering flame. If you do have any open flames in your home at any time, be sure to never leave them unattended and to keep an eye on your pets. Consider getting a fireplace screen to protect pets when sleeping in front of the fire if you utilize a fireplace. Also make sure the fire is completely out before going to bed. Small sparks and coals can get through a screen and result in a fire.

Secure Wires and Cords

Pets are often tempted to chew on loose wires and cords. Exposed wires can be a fire hazard, so consider securing any electrical objects so that their cords are out of reach.

Smoke Detectors & Pet Decals

Pets left home alone cannot escape on their own when there is a fire. Monitored smoke detectors contact emergency responders when you are not home and add an extra layer of protection beyond that of battery-operated smoke alarms. Placing a pet sticker(s) in the window will help rescuers know how many pets to look for, saving valuable time and hopefully your pets.

Pet Collars & ID's

Keep collars (with ID tags) on your pets at all times and leave leashes by the entrance or somewhere easy to find in an emergency. It is important that you can find your pets quickly if there is a fire. Know where your pets like to sleep and especially where they like to go when they are scared or anxious; like under a bed or hidden in a quiet corner.  In the event that you cannot find your pet when exiting, leave doors and windows open on your way out and call to them so that they come out on their own.

If you have any questions or require restoration services due to fire damage in your home, call SERVPRO of Newark at (302)733-7933. Our crews are available 24/7 for services.

Holiday Safety Tips

Cooking Fires

Local SERVPRO Fire Damage Restoration Specialist Offers Wilmington Families Tips on Cooking Up a Safe Holiday Season

Startling statistics underscore the need for caution in the kitchen

Wilmington, DE (Grassroots Newswire) -- Holiday party planning begins now for many families, and Tara Brown of SERVPRO of Newark offers some important reminders to Wilmington residents to help ensure this season glows with the warmth of good food and good friends, and not with the glare of a devastating home fire.

“The holiday season is a time when many families plan big and elaborate meals for large groups of people,” says Brown. “But all that cooking creates an extraordinary risk of fire. For a safe and festive holiday season, it’s important to understand that risk and take steps to minimize it.”

Cooking Fire Safety

Research from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reveals that in 2017, on average, U.S. fire departments responded to a home fire every 88 seconds.1 Cooking equipment was the leading cause2 of home fires and fire injuries, causing 47 percent of home fires. These fires resulted in 20 percent of the home fire deaths and 45 percent of the injuries.

“Wilmington families should keep these statistics in mind as the holidays approach. According to the NFPA, Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires, followed by the day before Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and Christmas Eve2,” says Brown. “Families should also be aware that frying poses the greatest risk of fire, in fact, the NFPA discourages the use of outdoor gas-fueled turkey fryers that immerse the turkey in hot oil.3 This video graphically illustrates the danger these devices can pose.” https://youtu.be/j3rF8F0JQRQ.

Brown offers these additional cooking safety tips from FEMA’s U.S. Fire Administration.4

  1. Keep an eye on what you fry: If you see any smoke or the oil starts to boil, turn the burner off.
  2. Stand by your pan: If you leave the kitchen, turn the burner off.
  3. Turn pot handles toward the back of the stove so that no one can bump them or pull them over.
  4. Wear short sleeves or pull sleeves up: 18 percent of cooking fire fatalities in 2016 were caused by ignited clothing.2
  5. Keep a pot lid or cookie sheet nearby to cover a pan if it catches on fire.

“Taking common sense precautions like these and keeping kids and pets out of the kitchen during meal prep can help keep your holiday celebrations safe,” says Brown. “The precautions you take could help prevent a devastating home fire, a tragic injury, or even the loss of life. While SERVPRO disaster response professionals are fire damage restoration specialists, they know how important it is to keep the focus on fire prevention, because for some types of loss, there is no remediation.”

How to Thaw Frozen Pipes

1/8/2019 (Permalink)

Exterior Wall frozen pipe

When you turn on a spigot and little to no water comes out, your pipe may be frozen.  Keeping the spigot open while the pipe is thawing will help the water run through it.  Running water through the pipe will help melt the ice too, only if the pipe has not erupted.  Carefully apply heat to the pipe section that has been affected with a hair dryer or wrap the affected pipe in a hot soaked towel.  Never use a blowtorch or an open flame device. Once the pipe is thawed your water should flow normally.  Make sure all you pipes within the home are monitored too.  A licensed plumber to check to make sure there are no cracks is always a good safety measure to take too.

Wet Smoke vs. Dry Smoke

12/26/2018 (Permalink)

Minor Carbon Chains from a Wet Smoke Damage

Smoke and soot can be very invasive and penetrate cavities within your home or business, causing odors and hidden damage. Did you know there are different types of smoke? There are two different types of smoke – wet and dry. Different types of soot residue are left behind as a result of the different smoke. SERVPRO of Newark has the experience to inspect and accurately assess the damage to come up with a plan of action.

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber. These types of fires usually are slower burning, tend to smolder, pungent odors, sticky and smeary, carbon chains likely to form

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood. These types of fires are fast burning, at high temperatures causing some to rise because heat naturally rises.

Protein Fire Residue- Evaporation of a material. The smoke is practically invisible, varnishes and discolors paints, odors are pungent

Look at the dog hair in the high to reach areas

Here at SERVPRO of Newark, we love serving all of our customers. We get to see and help so many different types of businesses and homes. At this one specific facility, they take care of dogs for daily doggie day care as well as boarding. This facility is a huge warehouse that has lots of pets running and playing throughout. Despite the fact their employees had cleaning duties on a daily basis, the owners noticed the heavy amount of dog hair and dander everywhere. This is, of course, to be expected considering what they do. SERVPRO performed a high horizontal surface cleaning to help eliminate dog hair that accumulated in those high, hard to reach areas. In this picture you can see the heavy amount of dog hair that was in an area that was high up. SERVPRO was able to successfully clean the areas.

What to Do When Your New Home Is Not Clean

12/12/2018 (Permalink)

A new home is a fresh start. Unfortunately, sometimes your new home isn't all that fresh. If your new home is less than immaculate, take these steps to clean it before you move in.

Eliminate Dust and Grime

Your new house looked clean enough when you viewed it, but you probably didn't peek under the stove or look closely at the cabinet interiors. A lot of dust, dirt, and grime can hide in out-of-the-way places. Handle these cleaning jobs before unboxing your stuff so you can unpack everything inside a fresh, clean home.

Dust high to low

Grab your microfiber cloths and duster and dust every surface in the house, starting with ceiling fans and crown molding, working your way down. Rather than a feather duster, Apartment Therapy recommends an electrostatic or microfiber duster.

Clean handles and switches

Doorknobs and light switches stained with grime are an unsightly reminder of just how dirty everyday surfaces get. Gently wipe doorknobs, cabinet handles, light switch plates, and other contact areas, taking care not to scrub away paints and finishes.

Clean under appliances

Pull out the refrigerator, stove, and other large appliances to remove crumbs and dust hidden underneath, then make a note on your calendar to do it again in six months.

Wash inside cabinets

Don't unpack your clean dishes into dirty cupboards. Wipe down cabinet interiors before unpacking. If you prefer to use shelf liners, now is the time to apply them.

Clean outdoor surfaces

No one wants to look at a stained walkway or driveway when pulling up to their new house. Clean these areas so your house looks as great from the outside as it does inside. Care.com also recommends scrubbing curbside trash bins and degreasing the garage floor.

Improve Indoor Air Quality

Some messes can't be seen with the naked eye. If your home's indoor air is dirty, you won't see it, but you might have trouble breathing or develop mysterious allergy symptoms. That's especially true if mold is hiding in your home. Even if you can't see it, mold can cause unpleasant symptoms such as coughing and sneezing, headaches, and rashes. If your asthma gets worse after moving into your house or you develop respiratory symptoms, take these steps to eliminate contaminants and improve your indoor air.

Replace the HVAC air filter

Your home's air filter is an important tool in the fight against indoor air pollution, but it can't do its job if it's clogged and dirty. Remove the old air filter and install a new one as soon as you move in. If anyone in the family has asthma or allergies, upgrade to a high-performance air filter.

Deep clean the carpets

Carpeting traps allergens like dust mites and dander in your home. If the previous owners didn't vacuum regularly, your new home's carpet could be the cause of your symptoms. Schedule a professional carpet cleaning to eliminate build-up in carpeting and be sure to dry it thoroughly, as wet carpeting invites mold. If you have allergies, consider replacing carpet with hard flooring.

Clean vents and exhaust fans

Air vents and exhaust fans are excellent hiding places for mold spores, especially in damp areas like bathrooms. Spray vents and fans with a solution of vinegar and water and wipe down. You may need to repeat the process a few times to completely eliminate mold spores.

It's frustrating to move into a house that isn't as clean as you'd like, especially if you left your own house spotless. Sometimes, the extra effort is a trade-off for a good deal, such as when buying a bank-owned property or a fixer-upper. However, sometimes sellers simply have a different interpretation of “broom clean” than you do. With a little elbow grease and time (or the help of a pro!), you can get your new home sparkling clean for move-in day.

SERVPRO of Newark is here to help you with these services. (302) 733-7933

Soot Clean Up

12/6/2018 (Permalink)

Soot Clean Up

Soot and smoke clean up can be a tedious task. Soot is very invasive and penetrates a lot of nooks and crannies of a home. When the smoke goes into all these cavities it causes odors. SERVPRO of Newark specializes in accurately assessing the extent of damage and helps develop a comprehensive plan of action. Each smoke and soot damage situation are different therefore requiring different techniques. Depending on what caused the fire from what actually burned or melted in the fire makes a difference. There are different types of smoke that will play a factor in determining which cleaning method is best to do. Wet Smoke, mostly from plastic and rubber will differ from Dry Smoke, mostly paper and wood and they both will differ from Protein Smoke.

Storage Closet

Storage Closet

Commercial water damages vary in size and can be rather routine or quite grueling. When commercial facilities call after hours they need you and they need you right then. Since we are 24/7/365 we are able to get crews to commercial properties to help mitigate the loss. We normally can get a crew on site within the hour and if additional help is needed we can make that happen. We understand the need to minimize disruption to commercial clients and employees. Sometimes commercial restoration presents unique challenges but we can most of the time make it happen. In this photo we show the last part of where the water infiltrated. It is in the most farthest corner of the building where some old filing is kept.

Lead Safety

Lead Manual

Lead Safety

There is a lot of talk regarding lead paint in homes in Delaware. Not only does the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have a protocol to follow but the State of Delaware has one too. Homes and/or facilities built pre-1978 must be tested for lead if removing more than 6 sf of drywall, disturbing windows, removing painted surfaces etc. (2 sf for HUD) There is an exclusion for emergency renovations. If you are a “Do-it-Yourselfer” you should follow the work practices outlined in the lead brochure to ensure your home and family are protected from lead hazards your project could generate. Older homes are more likely to contain lead-based paint. According to the American Healthy Homes Survey in April 2011 they found: Homes built between 1960-1977 had a 24% chance of having lead, homes built 1940-1959 had a 69% chance and homes built before 1940 had an 87% chance likely to have lead. Did you know that SERVPRO of Newark has 5 certified Renovation, Repair and Painting technicians? The firm is certified as well.

Pet Safety

Pet Safety

When it comes to emergency situations we always can think of being ready for ourselves and families. We should also consider additional tips for our pet’s safety. We should have extra leashes and crates available to us. Make sure you know where the updated lists of the pet’s vaccines and records are. Maybe have a copy of them or pictures on your phone readily available. Having the phone number to your veterinarian on hand to obtain a copy may not be the best option because you may be required to product those records in a shelter and the office could be closed. Keep at least a week supply of any medications on hand. Having your pet micro-chipped is a nice if your pet becomes displaced. When pets are chipped make sure you know what their chip number is too. There is an application/website called findingrover.com sponsored by the Petco foundation.  We always need to be prepared to take care of our animals, especially during emergencies. Pre-determined plans can help you think clearer and be a bit calmer.

There are 3 Categories of Water

Category 1 Source

There are 3 Categories of Water

Categories of water are defined by the IICRC S500 standard. It says the originating source of the water and the quality after contacting materials present determine the category. Category 1 is defined by water originating from a sanitary water source and does not pose risk. An example would be an overflowing bath tub. A Category 2 water contains significant contamination and has the potential to cause sickness if consumed. It may contain microorganisms as well as matter. An example would be overflow from a washing machine. Category 3 water is grossly contaminated and can contain pathogenic, toxigenic or other harmful agents. An example of a category 3 would be a toilet back up.

It does not matter what Category you have SERVPRO of Newark is here to help.

Facts on Desiccant Dehumidifiers

10/25/2018 (Permalink)

Desiccant Dehumidifier with a Generator in Progress

Desiccant Dehumidification

Desiccant dehumidifiers work under the principle of sorption. These types of dehumidifier’s place air in contact with hygroscopic material. There are different advantages of using desiccants in lieu of refrigerant dehumidifiers. They work well in temperatures below 32 degrees. They create low vapor pressure, 10-15 humidity ratio. They are more effective in a Class 4 drying situation. Desiccant dehumidifiers do not cool air rather is heats. Usually these dehumidifiers produce a higher grain depression than refrigerant dehumidifiers. Desiccant dehumidifiers range from 75-20,000+ cfm in our industry. A good way to think of how a desiccant works is similar to a clothes dryer. These machines can increase the existing temperature up to approximately 50 degrees F. SERVPRO of Newark owns a few of these big dehumidifiers.

Be Prepared for an Unexpected Event

10/24/2018 (Permalink)

Having a bit of pre-planning and thinking for a storm is a very good thing to do if you put yourself in a position of preparedness. With a little bit of thought and preparation you certainly will feel good for at least having thought of something before it happens. Clarity and calmness are important for thought. It is better to prepare for an event then to be in the mitts of the battle or storm. This is potentially when hasty decisions get made. You should consider that you may be away from your conventional daily routine. Having some food, water and essentials for couple of days or more is in my opinion wise.   You can always use those products from time to time to keep them fresh. Batteries, water and canned goods are an example of what can be rotated.   Communication and information on how to contact your family and friends is important too. Communication systems may be down and having a back up plan in an idea to keep in mind. It is like the Boy/Girl Scouts say, “Be Prepared”!

Refrigerant Dehumidifiers

10/24/2018 (Permalink)

Refrigerant Dehumidifer

When it comes to water damage drying equipment, there are many kinds of specialty pieces. Dehumidification helps create a balanced drying system minimizing secondary damages. Dehumidifiers remove excess moisture from the air and promotes evaporation. There are many different kinds of dehumidifiers available. The most common type of dehumidifier is a refrigerant. Refrigerants work best in high temperature and high humidity situations. The refrigerant dehumidifier cool incoming moist air below its dew point. As the warm air enters, the air is cooled so it increases the relative humidity of the air. When this happens the air’s ability decreases to hold vapor. The excess moisture is removed into the dehumidifier’s condenser and is pumped out through the line. These refrigerant standard dehumidifiers are most efficient when operating in temperatures between 70 – 90 degrees, above a 55-60 humidity ratio and above a dew point of 52 degrees. We here at SERVPRO of Newark own hundreds of these dehumidifiers.

Fire Prevention Month

Great Chicago Fire

Fire Prevention is a dedicated way to try to improve conditions and make efforts to correct an issue before it turns into a problem. Fire Prevention Week is during the period of which October 9 falls. Did you know Fire Prevention Week goes as far back as 1925? The oldest membership section of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is the Fire Marshals Association of North America (FMANA). They sponsored this week to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire. Click for more on Great Chicago Fire The association found a way to keep the public informed on fire safety as well as observe the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire. This fire, according to President Calvin Coolidge, could of been prevented if the conditions of the building were better. Due to this devastating fire over one hundred thousand people became homeless and lives were lost. Please use this month of October to try and help your home or business from fires.

Antimicrobial Treatments

10/19/2018 (Permalink)

Odor Control

SERVPRO of Newark sometimes uses antimicrobial products in our services. Antimicrobial simply means, against microorganisms. Microorganisms are life including, all forms of bacteria and their spores and fungi. We try to sanitize areas of the home that have been affected. Sanitizing reduces the number of pathogenic microorganisms to a safe level. The safe level is determined from public health agencies. These treatments inhibit the growth of an organism. Sanitizing is different and should not be confused with sterilizing. Sterilizing is 100% effective, the highest level, of destroying all forms of microbial life.  Our technicians comply with applicable safety and training while applying. Our technicians also use proper protection equipment such as, gloves and/or eye protection while applying as well. We use SERVPRO products that have Safety Data Sheets.

Mold Growth

10/19/2018 (Permalink)

Mold growth on ceiling

Mold Growth in homes can be concerning to the homeowner.  Here are some facts about mold. Microorganism growth, otherwise known as mold, needs certain requirements in order to grow. First, there needs to be a food source. Food sources are found in both structures and contents. Materials include wood framing, drywall, cotton, linens, latex paints, carpets, clothing, paper products, adhesives, food items etc. There needs to be moisture or high relative humidity in order for mold to grow. Usually in dark and damp places along with stagnant air creates a perfect environment for mold to grow. SERVPRO of Newark has technicians that are certified in mold remediation cleaning. We do not identify what type of mold is growing in your home. We remediate the mold.

Mold Clean Up

10/12/2018 (Permalink)

Mold is everywhere among us. There are certain types of mold outside in the air we breathe. These molds and pollen spores are things we cannot control. The air in our homes is referred to Indoor Air Quality or IAQ and it differs from outdoor air quality. Mold can often be a result from a previous water damage not properly addressed. SERVPRO of Newark specializes in water damage restoration as well as mold remediation. We have the experience and expertise to handle your mold needs – big or small. Our highly trained team can examine, evaluate and remediate your home efficiently and effectively. Tackling mold quicker than later can help reduce the spread of the mold spores. Mold under Dishwasher

10/11/2018 (Permalink)

Mold under Dishwasher

Mold can be tricky at times. Mold likes to grow in dark, damp places that have a food source. Mold absolutely thrives in this environment. SERVPRO of Newark sees mold every day in homes. One of the most common places we mitigate mold is from under refrigerators and dishwashers. Sometimes the water supply line or some type of malfunction occurs in the unit itself. Due to the fact the refrigerator and / or the dishwasher is normally against a wall or under / flush with the counter, it can sometimes be difficult to detect there is even a problem. In this photo you can see the area where a dishwasher once resided. When we pulled out the dishwasher and saw the mold we were able to properly take care of the situation.

Roof Tarping

10/11/2018 (Permalink)

Roof Tarping

Storms can cause a lot of damage. I feel like there are more storms in the recent years as opposed to many years ago. At first, I thought it was just the media and level of awareness. That may be accurate to a degree but the strength of the storms and the amount of damage they cause seem to be greater. When storms or hurricanes blow through our area it affects people. Homes that are situated near valleys or located near streams seem to get the most issues. Often times roof shingles can be blown off of a home. SERVPRO of Newark can come and help board up or tarp those areas after the storm has passed. This is important to do because if there is no temporary fix while waiting for the actual repair more damage can occur.

Category's of Water

8/14/2018 (Permalink)

Dripping Pipes can cause big problems!

IICRC S500 Standard for Professional Water Damage defines 3 categories of water.

Category III water is grossly contaminated and can contain pathogenic, toxigenic or other harmful agents and can cause significant adverse reactions to humans if contacted or consumed. Examples of Category III Water are: Sewage, Flood water, hurricanes etc.

A Category II loss is when water contains a significant contamination and has the potential to cause discomfort or sickness if contacted or consumed/ingested by humans. Category II water can contain potentially unsafe levels of microorganisms or nutrients for microorganisms. Some examples of a Category II Water are: Discharge from dishwashers, overflow from washing machines, overflow from toilet bowls.

A Category I loss is where water originates from a sanitary water source and does not pose substantial risk from dermal, ingestion or inhalation exposure. An example would be a water cooler.

Does your Family have an Emergency Plan for when Disaster Strikes?

5/1/2018 (Permalink)

Fire Devastation

When it comes to preparing for an emergency these 4 steps are crucial. 1. Put together a plan and focus on questions such as: how will we receive emergency alerts and warnings? What is our shelter plan? What is the best way to evacuate? What is our plan to communicate as a family? 2. Considering the needs for your household, what are some of the daily living needs and responsibilities in your family, are there dietary or medical needs? Are there pets living in the home? Are there young children in the home? 3. Make a family emergency plan, there are many resources and examples all over the web. 4. Practice your plan with everyone in your household. Talking, planning, and properly executing will keep everyone safe until the disaster is over.

Spring is Almost Here!

3/1/2018 (Permalink)

Prepare your home for the springtime

Spring is on it's way! As the weather warms up and the seasons change, we should prepare for the spring time as best we can. Here are some tips on how to get your home ready for this spring season!

Check/Service your Lawn Care Equipment. Cleaning up your lawn mower and changing the oil helps you to start fresh once its time to put it to use again.

Clean Patio Furniture. Dust off your outdoor tables and wash your patio cushions. You are going to want them ready for relaxing once the weather is nice!

Clear Your Gutters. After the fall season and then the wintery weather, your gutters probably could use a little attention. Clear out anything in your gutters to prevent mold or weeds growing up there.

Change Filters. HVAC filters should be checked/changed seasonally in order to ensure proper air quality in your home.

Impact of Fire Extinguishers and Soot

1/11/2018 (Permalink)

This photo shows the damage that not only a fire can do, but also the damage that a fire extinguisher can do. Even if someone used a fire extinguisher and contained or put out a fire, there can still be a strong odor and chemicals that need to be removed from the building/home.

The chemicals from a fire extinguisher can coat a room quickly and leave a thick dust behind. Normally this extinguisher dusting comes along with a coat of soot. Even if a fire has been small and quickly put out, the smell and chemicals left behind should be properly cleaned out of the space. You can see in the photo how apparent the soot and extinguisher's affects are. This is just one small portion of the room, but this entire living room was impacted.

Winterize Your Vehicle

1/8/2018 (Permalink)

Preparing for extreme cold weather is not only important for your home but also your car. Your vehicle functions in rain, snow, ice, hail, salted roads, and freezing temperatures. It is important to make sure your vehicle is properly equipped to handle all of the winter weather elements.

Before the winter weather has begun, you should have your car checked by a mechanic for antifreeze, brakes, tires, windshield wipers, heater, defroster, etc. While using your car throughout the winter, it is best to keep your gas tank at least half full. Salting and sanding your driveway or road is helpful for minimizing ice and increasing traction.

An emergency kit for your car is essential when preparing for the winter's extreme weather. Your vehicles emergency kit should include the following:

  • Jumper Cables
  • Ice Scraper
  • Flares or reflective triangle
  • Car cellphone charger
  • Sand for better traction
  • Extra Blanket

After the Storm

1/4/2018 (Permalink)

  • Make contact with family and friends in the affected area and let those that you know outside of the affected area that you are safe.
  • Return home only when authorities indicate it is safe. Attempting to re-enter the area can be dangerous and it is important to wait until the area has been cleared as safe by officials.
  • Avoid areas with debris and downed power lines.
  • Avoid flood waters, whether on foot or in vehicle. Just 6 inches of moving water can knock a person down, and one foot of fast-moving water can sweep your vehicle away.
  • Take note of any damage to your belongings or to your property
  • Photograph any damage to your belongings/property for insurance purposes
  • Tarp or board up damaged roofs and windows to prevent further damage. Your insurance may not cover additional damage that occurs after the storm has passed.

Flood Planning

1/3/2018 (Permalink)

It is important to know what you and your family's plan will be in the case of a flood or any other emergency. Familiarizing yourself with your local emergency contacts and community emergency plans may not feel like a pressing matter, but in the case of a flood/emergency it is valuable knowledge. It is important that all family members are aware of their address, family phone numbers, important medical information, and even email addresses. Other important information to remind family members of includes:

  • Emergency hotlines
  • School/work phone numbers & addresses
  • Childcare phone numbers & addresses
  • Personal emergency contacts & addresses
  • Indoor meeting places
  • Neighborhood meeting places
  • Out-of-Neighborhood meeting places

It is also important to have easy access to contact information of:

  • Police
  • Fire
  • Poison Control
  • Doctor
  • Pediatrician
  • Medical Insurance
  • Policy #
  • Hospital

Winter House Fire

12/28/2017 (Permalink)

Recently our SERVPRO technicians were called out to a property after a large fire. Along with the home owners, our team surveyed the house and the damage to what was left. In this photo, our technicians stand inside the home with the front yard totally visible through the burnt walls. The home was considered a total loss and there was not much left within the property for our team to clean or assist with. As SERVPRO of Newark, we did our best to lend a helping hand to the family in any way that we could especially since this trauma occurred right before the holidays. We assisted them in their move to a temporary living space and checked in with them often to make sure they were okay.

Snow Storm Christmas Party

12/19/2017 (Permalink)

Having some fun in the snow during our Christmas party

SERVPRO's 2017 Christmas party was a hit! The colder weather brings on a busy amount of business for our SERVPRO team. With such hectic and long  hours, we were happy to be able to find the time to fit in a great Christmas party this year. Our holiday party just happened to be thrown on our first big snow storm of the winter.

Here is a photo captured early on in this snow storm and in the Christmas party. Such stormy weather ended up being the perfect opportunity for a bonfire, a few snow ball fights, and some holiday fun! Earlier that day we had delivered cookies and pretzels to a few offices around the Newark area. We are happy to spread the holiday spirit and what better way than in the snow!

Board Up Following House Fire

12/7/2017 (Permalink)

Fire and Soot Damage

This picture was taken right before our SERVPRO team cleaned out and boarded up this house. As you can see, there was a major house fire here that affected almost every single room with either fire or soot damage. The fire originated in the kitchen and spread into the dining room, living room, and then to the bedrooms. Luckily, even with the large size of the fire, the structure remained intact and our technicians were able to save and clean some of the contents. Once our team was sure the structure was secure, they started on the demo of the home, removing all soot and fire damaged sections. After the home was rebuilt and brought back to livable conditions, SERVPRO moved the family's cleaned contents back in for them.

SERVPRO Before the Wrestling Season

12/7/2017 (Permalink)

Wrestling mats being pulled up for assessment

This year, one of our local school was gearing up for the wrestling season when they came across a problem. When pulling up their wrestling mats for cleaning before they would be put in place for the season, they found some mold growth in various spots and a lot of moisture. When our SERVPRO technicians assessed the mats and the conditions of the floors below them, they found many patches of moisture and mold growth. The mats had to be taken up and cleaned separately while they removed the mold. We mitigated the mold and dried the floor and the mats before they were put back in their place. Now that SERVPRO has taken care of it, the school is ready to start their wrestling season training.

School Year & SERVPRO

12/7/2017 (Permalink)

SERVPRO working in one of our schools before the school year.

SERVPRO was able to help three schools get ready for the school year after a major storm all at once.  Schools were closed for the summer time and they wanted them back up in tip top shape so that everyone would be starting the school year in clean healthy conditions.  Some of the schools had little time and strict constraints in order to obtain the desired results!  It was quite a time crunch but our SERVPRO technicians came to the rescue and the challenge was met! These three schools opened on time and with a staff that was extremely pleased with our team. We felt a strong sense of responsibility to not only the school, but the students and administration who would be spending the school year in those buildings.

Heavy Rains During Storm

12/4/2017 (Permalink)

A storm does not need to come in only the form of rain and flooding to seriously affect your home. Here is a photo of the flooring that had to be ripped up from a home after an extremely windy storm. Strong winds caused a tree branch to come down and puncture the siding to the house. Later that night, it started to rain heavily and eventually flooded the first floor, ruining a large section of the hardwood floors. Along with some belongings wrapped up in black plastic bags, you can see the amount of floor panels that had to be removed before we started our drying process throughout the home. Luckily this storm only affected a portion of the home rather than the entire property.

Refrigerator Cleaning

11/29/2017 (Permalink)

When was the last time that you found something in your fridge that was expired or needed to be thrown out? It is fairly common to find some perishable and/or questionable items in the back of your fridge that have been hidden behind some condiments or left overs for too long.

Once a week, your refrigerator should be tidied up by wiping spills and surfaces. Any sticky spots on containers should be wiped up as well. To prevent bacteria growth, the fridge should be cleared out, thoroughly cleaned, and organized. Products should be checked for expiration dates and mold before going back in the refrigerator.

It is important to keep your fridge clean and organized so that your items can remain bacteria and mold free!

Large Office Building Flood

11/28/2017 (Permalink)

Conference Room

This photo shows a large conference room located in a high rise building that has been flooded due to a large pipe line that burst. Unfortunately there were many rooms that looked like this one. This large building was affected on multiple floors and there were many offices that were scared their businesses would be greatly affected by the water damage. Luckily, our technicians were on the scene early that morning, once the call came in. They met with all the office managers and all those who had important belongings in the office building to assure them they would be taken care of. Once all those in the building were put at ease, SERVPRO started the restoration and cleanup process. We were proud to have helped so many different businesses get through such a stressful time.

Content Cleaning and Storage!

11/22/2017 (Permalink)

A recent storm in the Newark area took out some of a household's roof and siding. The brutal storm opened up the home to the rain and winds, which then damaged much of this families belongings inside the house. SERVPRO came in and removed all the damaged contents from the home and dried the water damaged areas of the structure. We detail cleaned all the items that were salvageable from the home and stored them for the homeowners. We even use our own storage units to ensure the security of the household's belongings and keep them under our care throughout the whole rebuilding process. Now that the home is completely restored and in livable condition, we have packaged up all of their contents and are delivering them back to the house.

What do You Think of When You See a Green Truck?

Winter is Coming!

11/3/2017 (Permalink)

Winter is coming and for those who have a working fire place in their home, it's important to know the how to operate it safely. Before anything else, you should make sure that your fire extinguisher is accessible and that it works correctly. You should also check you smoke detector and your carbon monoxide detector. The fireplace should be clear of anything around it that could catch fire. You should give the fireplace a range of three feet around it with nothing flammable nearby. Cracks and pops of fire from the fireplace should be sure to not land on anything. Before lighting the fire, check the chimney to make sure there are no blockages or animal nests that are lodged in the chimney. You should have you chimney swept every few years as well.

Once you have taken all these precautionary steps, you should be ready to put your fire place to use!

Mold Inspection and Remediation

11/2/2017 (Permalink)

Because mold can be hidden in walls, floors, ductwork, it can be hard to detect until it has already affected your home. Janet bought her first home and was so excited to move in. It took months of enduring a musky odor before she discovered her mold problem. Janet was so surprised that an inspector came across mold growth in her home because she kept the entire house spotless. Sometimes prevention is the strongest fight against mold growth. Dehumidifiers and air conditioners help keep homes dry and strengthen the ventilation throughout the area and should be used when humidity is high or living conditions are damp. Air ducts should be checked every once in a while as well. Ducts go unchecked in many homes for very long periods of time, which sometimes allows undetected buildup and mold growth.

Hurricane Irma & SERVPRO of Newark

10/25/2017 (Permalink)

Hurricane Irma hit Florida hard and many communities were impacted in the area. Not only are hundreds of families suffering from the harsh effects of Hurricane Irma, but so are many of the animals and pets of those families in Florida. Recently, SERVPRO of Newark went to the local SPCA and volunteered in the best way we could. Many dogs and cats were rescued from Hurricane Irma and flown from Florida to Delaware and brought to various SPCA locations. We helped bathe many of the dogs rescued from Hurricane Irma and got them ready for adoption. Being in the Cleanup industry, we did what we do best and cleaned up plenty of our furry friends as a way of giving back and contributing to the restoration of Florida.

Water in the Classroom!

10/24/2017 (Permalink)

This picture shows a school that sustained water damage from a sprinkler system in a classroom.  Notice the fans that are warped. The ceiling tiles were holding water and before we removed them from the ceiling you could see them sagging from the weight of the water.  We removed the ceiling tiles before they fell created an unsafe environment within the school.  Once the tiles were removed we treated the cavity with an anti-microbial treatment and dried the structure itself with a handful of our fans as well as cleaned the ceiling properly.  We completed this classroom to dry standards in three days and the school was very pleased with SERVPRO of Newark. They were able to adjust for the three days that we were in the building so that no class room time was interrupted.

Kitchen Cleanings!

10/24/2017 (Permalink)

SERVPRO's services are utilized in plenty of commercial buildings like apartment complexes, hotels, schools, churches, and retail buildings. But that is not where our services end. We often clean restaurant kitchens and ventilation systems as well!

A high volume kitchen that has grease build up and accumulated years of dirt is hazardous for both employees and customers. Especially commercial kitchens with many fryers, or smaller kitchens where employees are working in close quarters. We professionally clean many commercial kitchens in order to lower and prevent:

  • Higher Risk of Fire
  • Unpleasant Odors
  • Increased Vermin
  • Environmental Concerns
  • Plumbing Issues
  • Employee Injury
  • Customer Injury
  • Lower Food Quality

Even with proper ventilation systems, grease builds up over time and should be addressed. Call SERVPRO of Newark today to have your commercial kitchen assessed!

Before SERVPRO Arrives at the Scene

10/24/2017 (Permalink)

  • Leave soot on surfaces until a SERVPRO of Newark professional arrives and can assess the Fire damage. Cleaning surfaces may further damage furniture and walls.
  • Restrain from walking, cleaning, or sitting on damaged furniture, carpets, upholstery, and walls until a SERVPRO of Newark professional has arrived.
  • Electrical appliances like televisions sets, radios, microwaves, etc. that may have come in contact with water, soot, or fire should be avoided. Touching or cleaning electrical appliances should be handled by a SERVPRO professional or after consulting with an authorized repair service.
  • All food, drinks, and water that are close to a fire damage or a water damage may be contaminated. All consumable goods should not be eaten, they should be thrown out.
  • Leave all ceiling fixtures off. Moving air throughout the damaged rooms may cause more damage. Fire damage or water damage to the electrical wiring of ceiling fixtures are likely to heighten the risk of shock.
  • Do not send damaged clothing and textiles to the dry cleaner before consulting with your insurance agent and your SERVPRO of Newark professionals. Damaged clothing and textiles are likely to be mishandled at a dry cleaners rather than with the use of SERVPRO of Newark's Esporta services.

SERVPRO during Hurricane Harvey

10/24/2017 (Permalink)

As a Disaster Recovery Team and National partners with American Red Cross, SERVPROs from all over have traveled to Texas and helped those impacted by Hurricane Harvey. SERVPRO is working twenty-four-seven in restoring the communities that have had significant damage since Hurricane Harvey hit Texas. We are proud to be helping those affected by Hurricane Harvey return to their homes and rebuild their communities.

On the tail end of Hurricane Harvey, Hurricane Irma came in strong with vengeance in the state of Florida.  She whirled through and came in strong.  As a result, it activated more SERVPRO Storm teams to come in the devastated areas.

SERVPRO'S from all over the country came to aid to most of these areas.  We have been working tirelessly around the clock to help those in need.

We love what we do.

How to Prevent Water Damage in Your Home

10/20/2017 (Permalink)

Whether battling the cold and wet weather, or you are making sure your plumbing is secure, preventative actions should be taken against water damages to your home.

To protect your home from the outside elements you can:

  • Make sure your home does not have peeling paint around windows or doors, in which water can easily damage the homes structure.
  • Look for leaks around chimneys and plumbing and attic vents
  • Make sure your air conditioner drains correctly, at a slope, away from outlets.

To prevent water damage that would originate from your plumbing and pipes:

  • Wrap outside faucets
  • Caulk pipes where they meet your home
  • Disconnect garden hoses
  • Drain in-ground sprinkler systems
  • If your leaving your home for an extended period of time, turn off and drain your water system

ASPCA Fire Restoration

10/19/2017 (Permalink)

ASPCA Facility Aftermath

A vicious fire broke out at the Brandywine Valley ASPCA after a car had crashed into the building and caught fire. This was a devastating fire that not only a precious human life was lost but the lives of some animals as well. This ASPCA location is one of the largest in the Delaware area and had been recently renovated. Many cats and dogs were relocated during the restoration and rebuilding process of the facility. Luckily, SERVPRO of Newark was able to respond quickly and help bring the building back to life. We are proud to be a part of the Brandywine Valley ASPCA's rebuilding process and have made a point to get involved in their adoption events and make as many donations we can.

SERVPRO of Newark is Expanding!

10/19/2017 (Permalink)

Our New Edition

Over the last few years we have expanded our levels of equipment and grown to need more storage. Here is our new edition on our property! Our new garage is used to store all of our generators and a few of our other pieces of equipment that we have not had the space for recently. Snow plows and snow blowers and overflow of equipment. Once we started the construction of our new storage edition, it was only a matter of days before we were adding the finishing touches and getting ready to put it to use. Now we are storing our equipment comfortably and with organization. The state of the art security system allows us to have constant visual contact on the facility.  We already thinking about adding an additional structure.

Mold Inspection and Deodorization

10/19/2017 (Permalink)

When SERVPRO is inspecting a home or building for mold, there is a variety of key indicators we look for. Visible mold growth or the smell of mold or musty smells are the most apparent signs of mold SERVPRO looks for. In different situations, SERVPRO of Newark technicians will check for dampness and mold growth on carpet pads, carpets, we conduct inspections throughout the flooring, walls, and sub-floors. Moisture in the air and temperature within the home/building are monitored and measured by our technicians in certain scenarios as well. If we have found that mold growth is present within the facility, our mitigation process of the mold growth is the next step in our process. If there is no mold growth detected but there is a musty odor in the room which caused for the question and inspection of mold, SERVPRO is able to proceed with their deodorization services instead.

Healthy Home

10/19/2017 (Permalink)

Along with checking for mold and making sure you are aware of the signs that could indicate mold in your home, you should make sure you are keeping your home a healthy environment in as many other ways you can. You should ask yourself a few questions in regard to your environment:

  • Do you smoke inside your home?
  • Is the ventilation and exhaust fans between your laundry room, kitchen, and bathroom adequate?
  • When was the last time you changed your air filters?
  • When was the last time you changed the filter or bag to your vacuum?
  • Is your laundry done with bleach or ammonia?
  • Is your gas stove and fire place checked every year for emissions?
  • Was your home build before 1977? If so, has it been checked for led based paint?
  • Do your bathrooms have carpet?

Investigating the Source of Water to Prevent Mold

10/18/2017 (Permalink)

Affected Hallway of School

Mold can grow on many materials especially after a water damage.

Some Examples of Possible Materials of Mold Growth:

  • Wallpaper
  • Drywall
  • Paint
  • Carpet
  • Adhesives
  • Wood
  • Fabrics
  • Paper Products
  • Food

The byproduct of mold is the musty smell that grows more and more apparent as the mold spreads. Environments with a lot of moisture are the most common cause of mold growth, which includes environments that have encountered a water damage. After mold remediation/water remediation has been conducted, the job is not finished. The source of water and moisture that creates the perfect feeding ground for mold must be addressed to prevent future mold growth.

Here is a water damage in a local school that our SERVPRO restored. This school is a perfect example of the importance of finding the source of water damage and moisture. There was a large leak in the plumbing system that caused the water damage but later it was discovered that the old plumbing system had started to fail and water was unable to easily flow through the pipes and had been slowly affecting the lower level bathrooms for some time. If the school had not investigated the source of the water damage and moisture build up over time, they would have encountered this situation again, and a great possibility of mold later on.

SERVPRO Attends a Health Fair

10/18/2017 (Permalink)

SERVPRO's Health Fair Booth

Recently SERVPRO of Newark attended and hosted a booth at a local health fair. Jackie, one of our wonderful sales representatives was asked to host a booth by the retirement community that the Health Fair was held at. She was flattered to hear that one of our commercial clients wanted SERVPRO to be represented at the event.

She happily attended and talked to many of the residents at the retirement community about our services and the health benefits of having clean air, carpets, and furniture for the elderly. Not only did she speak with residents of the retirement home, but many members of the Newark community. We were happy to share the importance of a healthy/clean environment as well as support one of our valued commercial clients.

Water Damage Precautions

10/13/2017 (Permalink)

Flooded Home

Extra precaution should be taken when walking into a flooded area. You should dress protectively when entering a flooded area to lower the risk of injuring yourself on something that is not visible in the water.  Any food that has come in contact with flood waters or areas that may have been contaminated must be thrown out. Even if food is properly sealed or canned, it should still be considered contaminated. If furniture is lightly damaged and can be restored, there are a few things you can do to ensure that those items are recovered. You can start by propping cushions up for drying and keep drapes above water level to hang dry and keep from getting further damage. Wipe dirt from surfaces before doing your primary clean.

Fire Safety Tips

10/13/2017 (Permalink)

Aftermaths of House Fire

  • Prevent soot particles from further damaging your furniture and carpets by keeping movement throughout the home to a minimum

  • Change your HVAC filter but leave systems off until a professional can come check the home

  • Cover HVAC air registers with layers of cheesecloth to prevent soot particles from getting in/out of your HVAC system

  • If your home electricity is off, empty your refrigerator and freezer to prevent mold and odors. Keep your refrigerator doors open after removing food

  • In the case of your heating being off during the winter, pour antifreeze down your sinks, toilet bowls, tubs, and holding tanks to avoid freezing and bursting pipes

  • When walking on damaged carpets and floors, place towels down to prevent tracking of soot and further damage

Mold & Your Health

10/13/2017 (Permalink)

Mold throughout Basement

Whether it's a storm, plumbing malfunctions, or equipment mishaps, when water affects your home, the risk of encountering mold growth in the near future runs much higher. If the level of humidity is not controlled in the damaged area, moisture is absorbed into the environment and mold spores will begin to multiply. SERVPRO works in a timely manner because we are well trained in the importance of mold prevention and water extraction. Whether it be after a water damage or simply for your awareness, be alert for:

  • Visible Mold
  • Strong Musty Odors
  • Evidence of Current Moisture Problems
  • Evidence of Previous Moisture Problems
  • Excessive Humidity
  • Dampness

SERVPRO technicians are highly trained and knowledgeable about water damage, moisture in an environment, and mold and are able to bring your home back to the condition it was in before any damage occurred.

Fire Extinguisher Practices

10/10/2017 (Permalink)

Fire Extinguisher Location

Whether working from home or in a large commercial office building, the knowledge of how to correctly and safely use a fire extinguisher and when to use it is something everyone should have. How to operate a fire extinguisher should be displayed somewhere in the office for all employees to see. Here are a list of tips and information on when it is time to use a fire extinguisher:

  • The extinguisher should be clean and without any damage
  • An escape plan has been established and the fire is not blocking the way out of the building
  • All others in the building have been alerted
  • The local fire department has been called
  • Everyone is safe from the smoke and toxins the fire is creating
  • The fire is contained to a single object

Hurricane Damage

10/3/2017 (Permalink)

Storm Surge- the rising of the sea level due to a storm causing pressure in the atmosphere to change and winds to accelerate.

During a hurricane, the Storm Surge is what causes the most damage. Storm surges or the water that floods the land during a hurricane, is the most dangerous weather factor during a hurricane storm.

Hurricane winds can easily reach two hundred miles per hour. Winds that reach such dangerously high speeds are another huge cause of the damage that a hurricane inflicts on an area. Buildings can be ripped open and even down, trees are likely to damage properties, and items left out and unsecured become dangerous.

Heavy rain fall can cause flooding and water damage to homes. Cars are often flooded on the streets and in driveways due to extreme rain fall and flooding. Roads are commonly closed off and unable to be driven on during a Hurricane.

Being Prepared

9/22/2017 (Permalink)

Emergency Information in hand

September is a month in which National Preparedness takes place.  It is a time to plan and focus on unpredictable events that may take place in either your home or workplace.  This is an important time when everyone should do this.  As a family, perhaps you can sit down and go over a meeting place where to meet if an unfortunate event were to occur.  A walk through of the home or commercial facility can be done and locate where the gas or water shut off valves are.  Take the time to go over how to properly use a fire extinguisher in the event of a small fire and how make sure they are not expired.

Taking steps by arming yourself or business is important information as it may help during a stressful time.

Water Damage Tips

9/13/2017 (Permalink)

  • Shut off the source of water, or call those who have the authority to stop the water source

  • Make sure you are safe from electrical shock before turning off circuit breakers for the parts of the building that have been affected by the water damage

  • Hang drapes with coat hangers to keep them from in contact with wet floors and carpets
  • Remove wet furniture to prevent further damage and uneven drying as long as the furniture has not been contaminated
  • If sewage is involved in your water damage, the water is contaminated and you must avoid contact with the water as well as items contaminated by the water

  • Wash your hands after handling any water damage or items that have been in contact with the water damage

SERVPRO helps in LA

SERVPRO'S from all surrounding areas head in from all over to help the victims.  SERVPRO is a team oriented company that has compassion for everything we do, and everyone we help.  When another area of the country is impacted with a storm or tragedy we can call upon our fellow teammates to come in and help.  Sometimes due to the area being affected it may require out of state SERVPRO's to respond in a time of need.  In this specific case, SERVPRO's from North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland and Delaware among other states reported in to help the victims of this disaster that struck among them.  After all was said and done, all the help of these surrounding SERVPRO's were able to team up together and restore this broken community.

The Power of Four

4/25/2017 (Permalink)

The Power of Four

These four individuals are a powerful group.  They think outside the box and came up with some great ideas. They love and take pride in what they do. Within the building industry they are coming up with new and unique ways to improve our relations.  Most recently they tolled out a new plan that has really been working for us.  The amount of Emergency Ready Plans this team has prepared are amazing.  The go into buildings and point out all the potential issues, tag specific areas with cautions and help put together a written plan on what to do if an emergency arises. They pass the message on that SERVPRO is here to help.  They give the customer a binder or thumb drive whichever the customer prefers.  We also now have a mobile app for this as well.

SERVPRO Stools

SERVPRO Stools

How fun and playful are these SERVPRO of Hockessin/Elsmere stools?  They are stools on a swivel that help show our SERVPRO Pride.  We have them placed throughout the shop. We even put one in the waiting room.  They were made especially for SERVPRO'S and we could not resist buying them.  We are always in need of seats around the shop. Guys and gals are always finishing up loose end paperwork on their iPad's and this is a great place for them to have a seat.  They are colorful, fun, cheery and quite comfortable.  It seems like a lot of items around the shop have SERVPRO written or painted on them.  What a fun and happy way to show everyone our SERVPRO Pride.

Roof Hole

4/25/2017 (Permalink)

Roof Tarp

Here is a team of SERVPRO men attending to a hole in the roof as well as the side wall.  In this picture you can see the men working to put down a tarp and securing it with furring strips. They also placed a board over the side window. After a mishap has taken place in a home or building sometimes the structure needs to be secured from additional outdoor elements. Additional elements may be something like additional rain and winds.  The furring strips are placed to help raise, level or help secure the tarp and/or wood. They are placed perpendicular to the joists and then they are nailed in place.  This is a temporary fix until the roof can be properly repaired by a roofer.

School re-opens

School gets re-opened

SERVPRO of Hockessin/Elsmere was able to help three schools at the same time to get opened for school in the nick of time.  Schools were closed for the summer time and they wanted them back up in tip top shape for the students to return to a clean environment.  Some of the schools gave little time and strict constraints in order to obtain the desired results!  It was quite a challenge but SERVPRO of Hockessin/Elsmere came to the rescue and the challenge was met! These schools were able to re-open in time and it left both the administration and the staff very pleased with us! SERVPRO of Hockessin/Elsmere felt a strong sense of responsibility to not only the school, but the workers and students who were going to be returning to the school, and we could not have been more happier to help!
