Small Scale Flood Removal in Newark Plus Pungent Odor Removal

Water damage separates into three main categories: clean, gray, and black. When loss from a storm happens, if the water entering a property is rainwater from a damaged roof, as long as it is cleaned up within 48-hours, the danger of bacteria and contamination is slight. The problem is black water from groundwater flooding. This water intrusion brings anything it encounters into the home, including sewage, chemicals, and debris.

When SERVPRO answered a call in a Newark home for flood removal, we found the loss centered in a single area of the house; the stench of sewage permeated the air. Luckily, the homeowner removed the sofa and chairs into another part of the home when the water entered due to heavy rains. The french drain that should have directed water away from the property backed up, and water pooled around the back entrance instead.

During the initial call, our technicians advised the homeowner to stay out of the room until we arrived on-site in protective gear to test the water and perform the flood water extraction. After we arrived, testing showed the water contained both sewage and bacteria. We treated the water before removal efforts began. Our certified Water Restoration Technicians used portable pumps for speed and efficiency. Little standing water remained visible; however, our moisture detection equipment showed migration into the carpeting.

To save as many of the belongings as possible, we photographed and notated non-porous items as we removed them to another area for cleaning with our EPA-registered disinfectants. The only significant loss in this flood damage mitigation was the carpet and padding. Because of the danger of injury moving wet carpet, we used weighted extractors to pull as much groundwater as possible out of it. Then our technicians cut it into strips, removed it from the house, and disposed of it properly. Fortunately, we found little additional flood damage because the homeowner called SERVPRO in so quickly after the initial incident.

Drying and disinfection reduced the pungent odor in the home but did not eliminate it. Our technicians used air scrubbers and ultra-low-volume fogging to remove the remaining odors in the house to prepare it for installing new carpet and padding.
